Referees are seeking clarification after the Football Association overturned a decision to send off Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel.

Friedel was shown a straight red card for bringing down Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, who was through on goal, but the FA upheld Villa's appeal.

Referees have voiced concerns as, under current laws, Atkinson appeared to have no choice but to send the American off.

And now the officials want the FA to clarify its position.

The Professional Game Match Officials Board, which manages referees, will write to the FA to find out why the decision was reversed.
Couldn't agree more to be honest, but I can't see what could be done about it.

For me, obviously its a penalty, but there needs to be some sort of intent there for a straight red card.

Well the refs are told that because its a foul and he's the last man in a clear goalscoring opportunity, the keeper has to go, but the rule should specify intent. I guess they want clarification because by the letter of the law, he had to go once the penalty was awarded, which is ridiculous.
