Chelsea kept in touch with title rivals Manchester United and Liverpool with a comfortable win over Manchester City.
Michael Essien struck the only goal via his shin when he diverted Frank Lampard's free-kick into the corner.
The scoreline barely reflected the Blues' dominance as their slick passing moves left City chasing shadows.
Substitute Juliano Belletti came close to doubling the lead when his low drive hit a post, while a jaded-looking City offered virtually no attacking threat.
Chelsea's victory lifts then to second in the table and level on points with Liverpool, who beat Manchester United on Saturday to reduce their lead to four points.
United have a game in hand over their rivals but will be looking nervously over their shoulders.
Goals right at the start of each half helped Tottenham to an unlikely but hard-fought victory at Aston Villa.
Jermaine Jenas gave Spurs an early lead with a diving header after Brad Friedel parried Aaron Lennon's cross but Villa went on to dominate the first half.
Darren Bent made sure Robbie Keane's goalbound shot crossed the line after the restart, again set up by Lennon.
Substitute John Carew's late header from a James Milner cross gave Villa hope but Spurs held on for victory.
Well it really looks like Arsenal are finishing 4th now, all that is left is for us to finish them next week.

Well I remember Leeds at Highbury last game of the season staying up by beating Arsenal and allowing us to win the league. Supporting them was weird as a United fan.
Its a shame all Villa's hard work over the course of the season has been undone by a few bad results. They never recovered from conceding two goals so late on at home to Stoke, and unfortunately for Villa, you can't really afford to go on a bad run if you want to break into the big four. Shame.
