Amir Khan answered his critics with a fine fifth-round technical decision over Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera.

Khan had Barrera rattled early in the first round before a clash of heads led to a big cut to the Mexican's forehead.

It hindered his ability to box and Khan took full control of the fight from the second round on catching the Mexican with some lethal combinations.

With blood pouring down Barrera's left cheek the fight was eventually stopped in round five by the ringside doctor.

Enzo Maccarinelli faces an uncertain future following his ninth-round knockout at the hands of Ola Afolabi.

A decisive right hook from Afolabi inflicted a third career defeat on the Welsh cruiserweight, who lost his WBO title to David Haye last March.

"I trained hard, was nice and fresh but I think my lack of sparring told," said the 28-year-old Maccarinelli, who was also knocked down earlier in the fight.

"Take nothing away from Afolabi, I took him too lightly and I got beat."

Britain's Nicky Cook lost his WBO super-featherweight title in Manchester on Saturday when he was stopped in round four by Roman Martinez.

Cook, 29, made a promising start to the fight and almost had his Puerto Rican opponent on the canvas with a fine left hook in round two.

But then an uppercut from his unbeaten rival left Cook on his back.

The Romford fighter climbed to his feet but was down again before the referee called a halt to the contest.

The first round was relatively even with Martinez testing Cook with several accurate left hooks before the champion came back in the second with a fine combination that almost floored the South American.
Khan was immense, he has obviously learned a hell of a lot from Freddie Roach, he was actually protecting that glass chin of his. He really did outclass Barrera, he was way too fast for him.

Never saw the fight, but I expected Khan to get knocked out early on so very good win for him and Congrats to him and his camp.

Re: Superb Khan stuns legend Barrera

I had it on box office, Khan really did control the ring and people will make the excuse that Barerra was cut and that is the only reason Khan won.

Wrong, because four rounds were completed as they were most of the way through the fifth, it had to go to the scorecard anyway and Khan won the fight 50-44, 50-45, 50-45.
