Super-sub Fernando Torres scored a late header to take Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League and leave Portsmouth in relegation trouble.
David Nugent gave the hosts the lead with a low shot before Fabio Aurelio equalised with a powerful free-kick from inside the area.
Hermann Hreidarsson restored Pompey's lead with a stooping header.
But with just five minutes remaining Dirk Kuyt powered in from an acute angle before Torres' late cameo.
With the win in the bag, manager Rafael Benitez will feel vindicated for starting without his star striker who had been rested following his exertions during the Cup defeat to Everton in midweek.
Chelsea's title hopes took a further dent as they dropped two more home points in the goalless draw with Hull.
Both sides had chances to win the game, with Blues captain John Terry missing an open goal from close range early on.
German midfielder Michael Ballack hit the outside of the post with a fine free-kick, while Hull's Kevin Kilbane hit the woodwork with a header.
The Tigers had the better of the second-half chances with Craig One who likes the same sexan and Dean Marney both going close.
Chelsea now slip to fourth in the table behind Aston Villa, with Luiz Felipe Scolari's side four points behind leaders Manchester United having played two games more.
Aston Villa moved up to third in the Premier League and also set a club record of seven away wins on the trot by beating Blackburn.
James Milner put the hosts ahead when he angled a superb strike into the far side of net after a well-worked corner.
Rovers struggled to create a clear-cut chance and were denied two penalties when Gareth Barry held Benni McCarthy and Zat Knight tugged at Jason Roberts.
Gabriel Agbonlahor drove in a deflected shot off Ryan Nelsen to seal the win.
Villa's 10 away wins in the Premier League is the best record so far this season and has owed plenty to their ability to soak up pressure and catch teams out with their pace in attack.
Jo marked his Everton debut with two goals to inspire them to a comfortable home victory over Bolton.
Newcastle eased their relegation fears with victory at strugglers West Brom.
Craig Bellamy's goal sealed victory for Manchester City and piled more pressure on Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate.
Kenwyne Jones and substitute David Healy grabbed the goals as Sunderland extended their unbeaten run to four matches at the expense of 10-man Stoke.

You won by a penalty and nothing more, that reads fortunate.
And you were fortunate against Chelsea, if it hadn't of been for a poor refereeing decision then you probably would of walked away with a draw.

Not probably at all because we were dominating that game and people keep coincidentally forgetting that.
That's terrible logic. What if we dominated the game (which we did), played some very good football (which we did) and the penalty was just (which it was) ?
I fail to see how the fact that the goal was a penalty makes us lucky/
