Sami Hyppia is poised to join the Black Cats according to reports in the North East, with Newcastle ending their interest in the Liverpool man.

Sunderland boss Ricky Sbragia is keen to strengthen his defensive options, and like opposite number Joe Kinnear wants a cool head at the back.

Although Liverpool are reluctant to let the Finn leave, a two-year contract offer from the Stadium of Light could tempt the player, with a fee persuading the Anfield giants to do a deal.

Sbragia will turn his focus to transfers after Sunday's much-anticipated local derby with Newcastle at St James's Park, with Darren Bent and Tal Ben Haim continuing to be linked with moves to Wearside.


Ok, not an incredibly reliable source however would be good for more defenisive cover at Sunderland and hopefully this comes off.

I doubt he will, but either way, you'd be lucky to have him, hes a decent player, hes served us well for years, but hes always on the bench nowadays.

With the accent on "nearly".

Maybe a good signing, but players at that age that move to smaller clubs from big clubs where they "occasionally" play to a role where they are going to be depended upon, always seem to fail.

Maybe he'll be different

From what i've heard, Hyppia may be on his way due to liverpool not offering him a contract length he wants.


Or so i've read which could mean he is on his way out.
