Now a lot of you may expect me to pick the Istanbul final, well close. See my favourite game was in Europe the season we won it but it was the game that we cut very close and without winning we would not have gotten though to win it that year. Yes the game against Olympiakos that we had to win by 2 clear goals, then what do you know, Rivaldo pops a freekick in. Then call it luck but both subs that were bought on scored (Pongolle and Mellor) leading to the best bit of commentary ever heard when Gerrard hit that peach.
Gray: "OOOOOOOOH YOU BEAUTYYYYY, What a hit son, what a hit!"
So what's yours?

I'm going to be unoriginal and say the Champions League final.
But not the 99 one as most United fans would say, the one last year.
In 99 it was extremely dramatic, but at 11 years old I really wasn't the huge fan that I am now, so this one was so much bigger. The fact that we had finally reached another final 9 years on from Barcelona, and were facing English opposition, the team who had looked like taking over as the dominant force in English football a couple of years earlier, meant it was a huge match. We had already won the league, which makes the Champions League mean more because you can legitimately claim to be the best team Europe has to offer (Sorry Dmac).
I was in Hamburg at the time and watched it in the Shamrock Irish Bar, where I watched every United game that season. Its only a small place but the atmosphere was amazing, and I couldn't believe it when we took the lead, Ronaldo heading in his 42nd of the season from Wes Brown's cross. We could have been 2 or 3 up at half time before Lampard's lucky equaliser, so I don't feel too bad about the fact that Chelsea were the better team in the 2nd half and we could easily have lost it then.
When Giggs missed a golden opportunity in extra time, or more accurately, John Terry denied him, I thought that was THE chance to win the Champions League gone.
What followed in the penalty shootout was the single most dramatic thing I have ever experienced as a football fan, and one of the most joyous moments of my life. For me, the despair and dread when John Terry stepped up, compared to the sheer joy when he missed, and even more so when Anelka missed in sudden death, just sums up why we all love this game so much. Nothing compares to that. One minute it was the end of the world, the next it was one of the best moments of my life.

Well I'm sorry but the fact that you were knocked out and we weren't stakes the claim that we were still the best that Europe has to offer... but only in European football because of Rafa's style of play.

How can you be the 5th best in England but the best in Europe?
You have to win your own league to even be considered a worthy candidate for best team in Europe.

We were the best in Europe because that is our style of play, we won the biggest accalade in Europe, that officially makes you the best in Europe for that season.

I read your post and I still don't think you can claim to be the best in Europe when you're nowhere the best in your own league, but whatever.
What were the other contenders for your favourite game, besides Istanbul of course?
Your one against West Ham in the cup final was funny looking back. Gerrard goal. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Champions League requires a lot more luck to win, compared to winning a Premier League title, which is much more about consistency.
Basically winning the league is a much fairer representation on who is the better team.
And I'll get back to you on my favourite game. Though Federer vs Nadal tennis match at Wimbledon is up there, just to be different. That was such a showpiece. I struggle to watch whole tennis games usually, but the quality of tennis was just fantastic.
