What do Brits think of Becks?
There was some trailing discussion about him in the general football discussion thread about his time at Old Trafford, but I'm talking specifically about his current situation and the potential contributions he could make to the national side once more.
What's the general consensus in the U.K., specifically in England, on David Beckham? Is he still seen as a sellout? (and if yes, is it moreso for leaving Man U, or for leaving Europe?) Is he still considered to be "washed up"? Again, if yes, have his recent ventures in Italian football changed anyone's mind? What do you feel are his chances for being called up for the World Cup squad? What are the chances that he returns to the U.S. later this spring?
Personally, I think he enjoyed living in the U.S. for the past couple years, and that he'll most likely keep a house here, but the competition and prestige that go along with playing for Milan ultimately mean more to him, not to mention his increased chances of getting buzzed by Fabio. I think it's quite likely that he'll be capped at least a few more times for the qualifiers, but I think his fitness level is still questionable as for making another WC run. Only time will tell really. I suppose he can play himself into shape at Milan, but it's also not as if England particularly needs him.
He was never considered to be washed up, he just wasn't in the England team, that is no washed up.He has a very good chance of being in the England squad now he is playing and on late form scoring regularly for Milan, I would be quite surprised if he wasn't. I personally really don't think he will go back to the US because he has said himself he didn't expect to enjoy himself so much.

Dmac summed it up when he said he was never seen as a sell-out or a hasbeen. I think most people would welcome him back into the squad nicely (though there would be some who roll their eyes). Alot of people say he is past it, but alot of that talk tends to die down when he actual plays for us, considering most of the time he plays pretty well.
Does it fuck. It's one of the best lagers. Don't tell me you're a Carling boy lolol To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
I used to love him when he played for Manchester United, but sometimes it seems that he cares more about fame than football, so fuck him. lol @ going to the MLS when he could have still been playing in one of the best leagues.

...well maybe not to you guys, but those things have definitely been said about him. My roommate lived in Stockport for almost 4 years, and he does nothing but talk shit about Beckham. I remember him being largely ridiculed for coming to the States to play "soccer". I actually agree that he's not washed up, and that's not something I've ever thought, but I listed it because it's something I've heard on numerous occasions coming from U.K. voices.
With that said, he may not be washed up, but he's clearly past his prime, and the simple fact that there is even doubt surrounding a player who has been as productive as he has in the past means that it's questionable that he can still perform at or near the level he performed at in the past. Now, that's not me making a judgment on him, I'm just explaining how my question and the wording I used ("washed up") was definitely warranted based on how this seems to be an uphill battle for Beckham just to get selected for England's WC squad.
Also, if his move to the U.S. wasn't selling out, then what was it? The MLS isn't close to being comparable to La Liga, and the Galaxy as far as team prestige goes aren't even in the same dimension as Real Madrid. David Beckham didn't come here for the change in scenery or any other nonsense, he came here because he was going to be paid an exorbitant amount of money. Maybe you guys have a different definition of what it means for a pro athlete to 'sell out'?
