Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has promised to offer veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs a new contract.
The 35-year-old Giggs, British football's most decorated player, hinted earlier in January he might retire at the end of the season.
"Ryan will be offered a new contract, of course," said Ferguson. "He has been fantastic for us this season.
"He could win the Footballer of the Year award and it would be fitting if he did after the career he has had."
The former Welsh international has won 10 Premier League titles, two Champions League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups in his 18-year career with United
He made a club record 759th appearance in last season's Champions League final win over Chelsea, surpassing Bobby Charlton.
Giggs scored the second goal in United's title-clinching win at Wigan last season before converting the decisive penalty in the victory over Chelsea in Moscow.
Should he be offered a new contract? Of course he should, however I feel that it should be similar to the rumours of Hyypia's new contract, he can still be an active part of the first team, while at the same time learning his trade in the coaching side of the game. Which would benefit both the club to keep him on longer and him to be learning in the coaching side while still playing.
Another talking point though is that yes he has been good this season, especially for a 35 year old man, but player of the year? I don't think so to be honest and yes it would be fitting but I can't see it happening.

But he has definitely been good recently and has shown great versatility. He was man of the match against Chelsea when playing in centre midfield, which may become his primary position now due to his ageing legs, although he can still do a job both on the left wing and even at left back, as he showed by filling in against Stoke away.
Yes, he should learn his trade as a coach. He has so much top level experience as a player and has such a cool temperament. I think he has all the tools to make a great coach, so that should certainly be in the contract.
Good to see he is not retiring yet. There were strong rumours that this season would be his last. I just want him to stay in the squad because he has been there since the day I watched my first match. It would seem weird without him.
Obviously that goes double for Ferguson.

Good to see that he isn't retiring? Where does it say that he still wont, all this article is saying is that United are prepared to offer him a new contract, nowhere does it say that he still can't reject and retire.

I think if he was planning to retire the club would already know of his wishes. I can't imagine him turning this down but we will see.
