This is very relevant to my musical tastes because a lot of my favourite bands have certainly seen better days. A few notable exceptions are the evergreen Iron Maiden and also Metallica, after their return to form with Death Magnetic.
Anyway, some bands who used to be amazing but arn't that great anymore:
Cradle of Filth - Used to be fucking awesome but they have become too mainstream recently. Their last few albums are just pretty dull and don't have the atmosphere their old CDs had. Mainly because Dani got rid of all the good members <,<
Megadeth - I love most of their stuff, but although I enjoy some songs off their last few CDs (anything from after 97) they just arn't anything special anymore.
Opeth - They appear to have attempted to become more accessible and reach a wider audience, and it has compromised their sound. Their newest CD is nothing compared to the genius of years gone by. Too 'metal' and not interesting enough.
Yours?

I agree that their new one is pretty shitty, but I love Volume 3. Personal taste of course, but while I love the pure aggression of the first one, I feel Vol 3 is a more well rounded album and as well as heavy angry songs such as The Blister Exists, we get soft atmospheric stuff like Prelude, Danger-Keep Away, Vermillion pt 2. Corey's vocal talents are showcased more.
I agree though that there is nothing like their first cd for that type of music.

Right, theire first album was wall to wall bad ass. After that I just couldnt get into it, it lost a bit of its energy to me.
Yeah it did lose energy, but at the same time it gained other things. It is more varied and shows their talent more in my opinion, but each to their own.
I like all Systems albums, but I would certainly agree with you that the first 2 are the best ones.

GreenDay used to be a fun little band to listen to until they went all political. Like men in skin tight pants, wearing eyeliner will be taken seriously on the political stage. The one song that started out with the boy and his girl before he went off to war was just complete bullshit. I've never seen such shameless shilling to sell an album.
Rammstein used to be a fucking awesome band to listen to. I used to laugh at all the little American boys singing along to Mutter, not realizing the song was about incest. Then Rammstein did Benzin and it all went to shit, mainly because they thought they should speak on American politics.
Sevendust is a great example of a band that went down hill. Granted I still buy their album because there are at least three songs per album that remind me of the 90's. However, for the most part Lajon got away from his amazing vocals to sell to the demographic that likes the heavy yelling in their music. A demographic of Thomas's (>_>) Sad really because Lajon has an amazing singing voice.
All I can really think of right now. Im not into your 80's rock, Im late 90's to 2008.

Green Days underground albums (Kerplunk!, 1038 smoothed out slappy hours) were really great. Dookie was also good, as was the followup Insomniac, but after that they just started to blow. And as much as I dont like American Idiot, Id have to say its better then Nimrod and Warning, which were terrible albums.

Sevendust was a band I never could get into. I mean I saw them live constantly because they always toured with bands I did want to see (Coal Chamber, Static X, etc.) but most of there style never really appealed to me.

Man, the one I always seem to mention (not because I feel strongly on it, but they seem to get spoken about alot) are Nickelback. Curb and The State are awesome albums that whilest catchy, were so gritty and had great complex lyrics. Silver Side Up was aite, but once they realised songs like "How You Remind Me" (which I like, but moving on...) are what got them the big money, they pretty much got rid of everything that made them awesome in an attempt to try and get as many sales as possible.
Selllllll outsssssss.
