Directed/Written by first time everything, Bryan Bertino, The Strangers is a film about a Kristen (Liv Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman) and their night at James' old family cabin. Once there, they get a knock at the door at 4 A.M. A woman without a seen face keeps asking for someone who didn't live there. A little while later, James and Kristen realizes that the strange woman isn't alone. From there, it's a game of these "Strangers" playing with the emotions of the couple while James and Kristen tries to find a way to get help.
Much like last years surprisingly great scare film, "Vacancy", this film relies on only a few actors. In fact, not counting one flashback scene, there was only 8 actors in the entire film (3 of which were only on screen for a few minutes). The biggest strengths of this picture was the eerie mood and the haunting record playing throughout the movie. Another thing I particularly like was that they never went into too much detail about anything. Instead of going the American route of taking away all mystery, they left many unanswered questions. Those unanswered questions only made the film even scarier.
The biggest weakness for a lot of people would have to be that not much happened. Up until the very end, the Strangers doesn't even touch the main actors. Then when they do touch James and Kristen, it's just straight out violence. So if you're someone who needs a lot of action, this may not be the film for you.
Loosely based on the Manson murders and the European film, "Ils", The Strangers is currently my pick for the best horror film of the year.

I finally saw this last night and I really enjoyed it. I think that like most great horror films it is a simple concept which was brilliantly executed. Some of the parts really scared the shit out of me lol. I agree with what you say about the lack of details being intriguing and making it more scary. Probably one of the best horror films of the last few years which I have seen. It had a great atmosphere.

I liked the film and it was very well made. They did a great job of building the tension between the charactors and there were some really exciting parts. That said, I didn't think it was anything amazing, it felt a bit too similar to No Vacancy and some parts were just so cliche. What's that, your mobile is out of battery? I bet it is To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

lol
It is very rare that you get a horror film without that sort of stuff though. Those are minor criticisms really imo.

I went to see this movie a few days after it came out in theaters and that was a bad idea. Literally every seat was filled and there were a shit load of teenage girls in there that screamed at everything possible in the movie. Even the part when you saw the person in the mirror then the girl turned around and she was there, they screamed at that...Aside from that I think it was a good movie and it was more of a jumper/suspense movie that a flat out horror movie though. I did think it was very well made though but some of the people in the movie theater just got annoying.
