'Dark Knight' sets box office record with $66.4M

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Warner Bros. executive says the Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" has set a single-day box office record by taking in $66.4 million on opening day.

The movie's Friday haul surpasses the previous record of $59.8 million set last year by "Spider-Man 3." "The Dark Knight" also might break the opening weekend record of $151.1 million that also was posted by "Spider-Man 3."

Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman says the death of co-star Heath Ledger and the buzz about his frenzied performance as the Batman villain Joker was a big part of the movie's allure.

Like nobody saw this coming. I'm kinda shocked it only did that much. I thought it would have been a lot more than that the way it had been selling out everywhere. I will be shocked if it don't hit around 200 million this weekend.

Who would have thought that the "geek movies" of Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, Star Wars, and super hero movies would do so well this decade

Only Harry Potter can really be considered geeky really. It's no surprise when so many people grew up reading the books/comics, of course they are going to see it on big screen if they liked it. That added with improved special effects that are in these movies, makes the movies so good.

Still need to see this movie though; probably will in couple days, once all the kids have seen it and wont be screaming there lil heads off in the middle of it; hate it when that happens.

Can The Dark Knight replace Titanic? Thats the real question..

I doubt The Dark Knight will be in theaters for 6 months to be able to replace it. But for as long as it is in theaters I am sure it will be damn close. The only problem is with X-Files coming out next week it is going to take a lot of people away from it.

As Troy said, this is far from surprising. I only worked last night, and it wasn't even 10 in the morning and we were already packed with people for Dark Knight. I asked people throughout the day if they were going for Dark Knight, most said yes and I gave a little review saying it was incredible. I got in a legit conversation with one guy, telling him Heath did just an incredible job and how he thought Heath was kind of random as a choice, than I agreed and told him you'll wanna see it again right after.

I expect the same tonight.
