Director Kevin Greutert Talks Saw 6
Source:FearNet
November 18, 2008
Buzz around town says that Kevin Greutert is the cat to go to if you need a horror film edited. He's been on the Saw franchise since the beginning and he spliced and diced The Strangers. Next up, he's in the director's chair for Saw VI and in an interview with Fearnet he talks about the early stages of development.
"I've got hundreds and hundreds of pages of every conceivable variation of what we can do with Saw VI and beyond," he says. "One of those will hopefully be the thing that we get. But it's a matter of thinking through every possible thing we can imagine. And of course creating new characters that we think people will like and can contribute to the drama – that's important as well."
Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton are back to pen the next installment which is already booked for release on October 23, 2009.
"I'd love it to be the best of both worlds," Greutert adds, touching on the tone. "Out of the five movies, [Saw] is my favorite because I thought it had the most out of the bunch. It was very stylistic but also referenced giallo filmmakers. It had a good twist, but then it also had good dramatic elements. But I also loved Saw II with the adrenaline and the pace of the thing. It moved fast enough – because [Saw] was kind of slow and meticulous and Saw II was more breathless. I'd love to be able to do both."
Principal photography is expected to begin in March.
They've got a formula and an audience. They don't have to make that much money with the film to turn a profit, so they'll probably keep going with it as long as that's the case and there are people willing to make them.
Yeh everyone is basically 10 million to make. Plus I'm sure marketing cost, but still. Lets check this out
---------------
Records
If Saw V grosses around more than 62.8 million dollars in its theatrical run, it will become the top-grossing horror franchise of all time in unadjusted dollars. (Which it did)
Saw III gave Lions Gate its highest-grossing weekend in history, outdoing the previous record set by Saw II of $31.7 million to a bettering $33.6 million.
Both II and III broke records when they were released in the holiday period of Halloween. Both movies managed to top the "Halloween Weekend Openers" Saw II premiered with $31.7 mil in 2005, and Saw III, which bowed to a slightly higher $33.6 mil in 2006. Saw IV premiered at $32.1 million, making it number one at the box office on Halloween weekend 2007.
All the movies in the Saw series have managed to gross over $50 million, putting them in the top 10 all-time highest total gross for Lions Gate.
On IGN's list of the top twenty-five movie franchises of all time, the Saw series ranks as number twenty-five.
Box office revenue (worldwide): $618,701,461 Total Budget (5 movies): $36,000,000
I love the Saw moves and I'll continue watching them for as long as they keep making them. It's no surprise to me that it's made so much. I just hope that if/when it's time to stop they bow it out and not make an inferior product.
Reason: Thats how much the series was intended for. Jigsaws actor (cant remember his name dammit) originally signed on for 6 movies, so ive been expecting 5 sequals since the first film all those years ago. Sad really considering none of them have come close to capturing the awsome that was the ending to Saw.
As long as Saw 6 is the end of it I'm fine with it. Saw 5 was a bit of a let down, but probably vital to how 6 will pan out and hopefully end. If they advertise Saw 6 as the last one, I'm sure it will outsell the previous movies. My ass will be in a seat.
i agree whole heartedly, im waiting for a dvd rip/r5 of saw V because after going to the cinema to see Saw IV and hating it, im not paying money to see a film series which should have ended at number 3.
Right i havnt seen Saw V so i havnt a clue if it explains why that cop dude is continuing Jigsaws work, Saw IV left a very bitter taste in my mouth, as we dont have a villian we can relate to. Alot of the people in the cinema with me were all "WTFBBQ" when he was revealed to be continuing jigsaws work.
They shouldnt have killed Amanda if they wanted to make a longterm jigsaw apprentice, she had the motivation and the people could relate to her reasoning for turing heel.
