The Farrelly Brothers are making a 3 Stooges movie… again. This is an idea they’ve been kicking around for years now, and it’s never really gone anywhere. Variety says that MGM has re-revived the idea and now they’re at it again.
This time, it may actually happen. Unlike Warner Bros, the last place they tried to make it happen, MGM doesn’t have much else going on. They’ve even set a release date for it, just to show the world how serious they are. They’ve staked out November 20, 2009 as their place to put a pie in your face.
I forsee only one problem here, and it’s this: The Farrelly Brothers are no longer relevant. They’re also no longer any good. Peter and Bobby Farrelly haven’t done anything worth remembering since There’s Something About Mary back in 1998. The 90s were their oyster, with a string of hits, and since then they’ve done nothing but excrete waste.
On the other hand, perhaps that makes them a good match for the Stooges, who are also no longer relevant. I’m sure my dad still thinks they’re hilarious, but their brand of humor, much like the Farrellys is long since past its expiration date. Putting the Stooges and the Farrellys together is a perfect storm of complete and total irrelevance. I don’t forsee a hit
If this movie is going to be for The Stooges what the movie Chaplin was for Charlie Chaplin, I might give it a look. If it's going to be just another movie where the Stooges are dropped into another fish out of water situation, then lol @ MGM for green-lighting this.
