James Cromwell Joins Spidey 3 Cast

James Cromwell has joined the cast of Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man 3 as Captain Stacy, the father of Bryce Dallas Howard's character, Gwen.

In the "Amazing Spider-Man" comic books, Stacy dies a heroic death as he saves a child during a battle between Spider-Man and another supervillain. Peter Parker love interest Gwen Stacy (Howard) ends up blaming Spider-Man for her father's death.

Cromwell joins returning cast members Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco as well as Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church and Theresa Russell. Sam Raimi is directing.

Cromwell is best known for starring in the "Babe" movies, the first of which earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor, and as a villain in L.A. Confidential. His recent role on Six Feet Under earned him an Emmy mention in 2003.

Topher Grace seems like he would have made the perfect Peter Parker if Tobey wasnt around at the time. He seems more like a good guy than a bad guy.

Joe, do you know what his role will be?

I would imagine that the premise for this movie is Harry becoming the Hobgoblin and going after Spidey right?

Also, what did Gwen Stacy do in the comic books? I dont remember her to save my life.

Topher is set to play Venom. It's unclear if it will be the Eddie Brock character but they're aiming for someone who makes friends with Peter and MJ to only turn on both of them when they least expect it. They're going for the evil Peter Parker look. That's why they cast someone similar to Tobey in appearance.

The reports i've heard lately suggest that Harry will realize his Dad was an idiot and team up with Peter...although this is unconfirmed. I do know that he will rebuild the equipment and become the Hobgoblin.

Gwen was Peter's original girlfriend in the comics. Basically the role MJ played in the first Spiderman movie was what Gwen was to Peter in the original stories. She was killed when the Green Goblin was fighting with Peter and Peter's webline accidentally snapped her neck when he tried to catch her as she was falling.

MJ came along shortly before Gwen's death and they just progressed the relationship between her and Peter after that.

You know the rest I imagine.

Topher is going to end up looking too much like the black Spiderman since he is too small for the size Venom is meant to be

Maybe they CG or something to make him look the right size. I'm just really nervous about this because i've been waiting for a few years to see Venom on the big screen and now it looks like they will mess him up by completly ignoring how he's looked in every comic and TV show in the last 40 years.

If it makes you feel better I am reading a report from a costume designer on the set of the movie that said there are two versions of the suit.

One for Tobey and one with "added effects" that Topher is wearing.

Read into that what you want.
