Silent Hill trailer

The trailer link is above the picture of the movie poster. The poster looks kind of stupid I think.

Looks pretty good, looks like a re-telling of the first game except the protagonist is a woman this time. It also seems the focus is on atmosphere and scares instead of action, which is exactly how a movie based on the Silent Hill games should be.

The poster does look stupid, but the Silent Hill games are usually great experiences so I hope they do them justice. It also helps that it's not being directed by that hack Uwe Boll.

No no, its being directed by Christophe Gans. He's best known for Brotherhood of the Wolf, which if you've never seen it you really must. Though I will say he has a good flair for action sequences, he seems to have the feel for Silent Hill down pretty well.

Here's a little more insight into the movie/game for those not familiar with the premise:

Greg's Preview Thoughts:
Sort: By Most Recent | Chronologically

12/06/05 - Somewhere between 'Pong' and Halo, certain ambitious videogame creators have been striving to stretch the boundaries from simple eye-to-hand-coordination exercises into artistic, cinematic storytelling. An emphasis on plot over picture goes all the way back to text-only games like Zork, but it's the increasing capablity of new technology to deliver better visuals that has really inspired creators to create games that look and feel like actual "movie" experiences. One of the most artistic game series, introduced in 1999, has been 'Silent Hill', which technically falls under the "survival horror" genre (think Resident Evil), but with its heavy emphasis on spooky, fog-laiden atmospherics and psychological factors, the series feels less like a "game" and more like a "choose your adventure" exploration of a theatrical movie. The concept behind the series is that the town of Silent Hill seems to be stuck between two worlds: our reality and a nightmarish, monster-filled version of the town of blood-stained walls, apocalyptic images and lots and lots of fog. As the player explores the town, reality flips back and forth, and tricks are played on time and continuity. There's also a sort of askew humor at place when you least expect it. Aesthetically, the vibe of 'Silent Hill' reminds me of the films of David Lynch, and the concept of the series is not really that far apart from his groundbreaking TV series, 'Twin Peaks' (but with more fog and demon dogs, and less dwarves).

So anyway, as the trend of videogame-inspired games grows, such a cinematic game was an easy choice for adaptation, and so here we are with a movie directed by France's Christophe Gans, best known for Brotherhood of the Wolf, which if I recall correctly, also featured a lot of fog, but more importantly, it brought a great European, nearly arthouse, feel to what in American hands would've been just another werewolf/monster movie. Of course, that makes this a Frenchified interpretation of a Japanese take on an American horror story, starring an Englishman (Bean) and an Australian (Mitchell), and filmed in Canada. Fitting in there somewhere is the fact that the script was written by the prolific (if you count dozens of unproduced projects) screenwriter Roger Avary, still probably best known as Quentin Tarantino's collaborator on his early films. So, the movie has a much better than usual pedigree, and although I generally skip movies based on video games, I might actually see this one.
