Jimmy Fallon's kindergarten yearbook at St. Mary of the Snow in Saugerties, New York, listed him as "most likely to take over for David Letterman."
Letterman's going nowhere, but close enough: Fallon is succeeding Conan O'Brien as the host of NBC's "Late Night" sometime in the middle of next year. NBC on Monday made official a plan that's been talked about since 2003, when a network executive first broached the idea of doing a talk show with the former "Saturday Night Live" star.
"I've been doing a monologue in my living room the last three years and it was embarrassing," Fallon joked at a news conference.
However, he said, "my wife seemed to like it."
NBC's plan is to have O'Brien move west to take over for Jay Leno at the "Tonight" show next year. After a break to refurbish the Rockefeller Center studio where O'Brien now works, the 33-year-old Fallon will take over.
The Fallon transition is being managed by Lorne Michaels, who famously picked O'Brien out of obscurity to fill Letterman's old slot at NBC, then stuck with him despite savage early reviews.
Fallon, a former "SNL" cast member who has acted in movies the past few years, should have an easier time of it, he said.
"You're never really certain of these things, but I just think he's built for it," Michaels said. "You've just seen that he's really funny, he's smart and he has a really, really good work ethic."
Fallon signed a deal with NBC in 2007 that was widely seen as a way to keep him in the fold until the time came for Monday's announcement.
bad pick...

Well, he was hand-picked by Lorne Michaels himself, and he tends to know what works and what doesen't. Lorne also picked Conan for the job, despite the fact others said he would do terribly. I trust Lorne's judgement more so than most unemployed internet critics.
Fallon tended to annoy me on SNL, with his constant giggling, but that shouldn't prove a problem in this type of setting. Jimmy likes people, and I think it will translate into a good rapport with guests. Nothing drives me more crazy than watching some Letterman, when he clearly isn't interested in his guests, and acts superior to them. The main thing he will need to work on is knowing when he needs to take the lead, or back off and let the guest be naturally funny.
Seriously though, anyone has got to be better than Carson Daly. He is so uncharismatic, it hurts me. I think Jimmy will take a few months to get into stride, but I think he will be decent. And hey, I anticipate a lot of SNL guests, and that is fantastic. $100 on Tina Fey being his first guest.
A lot of people say that, but SNL is in a huge transition period. They have a solid cast of new and young who works well together, which I tend to prefer to the format of several years ago, where you had a few superstars who tended to steal the thunder away from the supporting cast.
I think Kristin Wiig is going to explode soon. Samberg, Forte, and Poehler are slowly working their way up there too.
I'm not sure if I like the pick, but at least I won't have to stay up all night to see Conan, though Jay does have his moments.. I love Conan though and I hope he has as much freedom with the main show as his does now.
It is rumored that Jay Leno may go to abc or fox to compete with Conan unless NBC can sign him to some other deal.

I hate this deal. Fallon was one of the WORST talents in the history of SNL in my opinion. The guy couldn't get through a sketch without laughing at himself or Horatio Sanz. It was so annoying. I just don't find him funny. And don't even get me started on "Taxi" and the other numerous amounts of gems he has delivered to us.
I will watch Conan when he switches over to Jay's spot, but after Conan is done, I will shut off the tv to make sure Fallon doesn't get my ratings. Blech.
Erin, did you ever watch the "Joe Schmo Show"? It was a really funny 'reality' show that wasn't really a reality show. Check out season 1 if you can, Kristen Wiig was one of the people on the show, and was hilarious. She played "Dr. Pat", who was a cooky doctor that was quite funny.
