| Re: Roger And Me Review (Non-Spoiler) Roger And Me was the first piece of work by Michael Moore. In this movie he focuses on his home town of Flint, Michigan. After the General Motors plant was closed down in the mid-1980s. The focus of this movie was Michael Moore’s dogged attempts at getting an interview with Roger Smith, The head of GM. Who happens to be the man responsible for eliminating 30,000 jobs, that left the town destitute.
When you first see Michael Moore you realize a few things. He’s a regular guy, who is a pretty standard American. He is overweight, doesn’t keep up with his hair, and doesn’t really care about the way he dresses. As you get a little more into it you also realize he has some big balls, and will do what it takes to get what he wants. Now going into this I’ve seen several of Michael Moore’s newer movies, and you can tell the difference pretty quickly. It’s not a bad thing, it actually shows the growth he’s made in getting his movies to a much higher level.
I really liked the grittiness of this movie. It’s like the original Rocky. Had that rough feel, you knew this was Michael Moore’s work in the rawest form. Seeing him go after Roger Smith, and really tackle the hard hitting questions. Seeing him not back down to anyone, and go wherever he wanted while staying ahead of the game. And not getting himself into trouble. This was what documentaries could be. He has made the documentary into an art form, and has brought it center stage for everyone to see. Michael Moore changing the way people look at critical issues. Sure some of his views are a little skewed, but it’s just an opinion. You have to take it all in, and agree or disagree.
Overall I’d say this was a good look at the original documentary by Michael Moore. I’d recommend it to anyone who’s into documentaries, or even anyone who’s seen any of Michael Moore’s work, and wants to see his roots. Overall Rating: 7/10
