Marvel Studios is setting Matthew Vaughn to direct Thor, based on the Marvel Comics character. Marvel is aiming for a pre-strike production start this winter.
Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) did the adaptation of the comic book franchise that launched in 1962. Thor is a blonde-tressed, hammer-wielding hero who's sent to Earth to protect mankind.
Vaughn's deal is closing just as Paramount releases the Vaughn-directed Stardust today.
Thor marks Vaughn's second effort at a superhero pic. He was attached to direct X-Men: The Last Stand before bowing out for personal reasons. Vaughn, who produced the Guy Ritchie-directed films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, made his directing debut with the Daniel Craig starrer Layer Cake.

If you were on a bus full of gay guys would you get off?
Love the director. Layer Cake was awesome. And he had his hands in on Snatch and Lock Stock. I will see this movie because of him. But I was never really into Thor. They are kinda pulling now for comic book movies.
But where the fuck is the Lobo movie? That is the best story ever!
Now that Matthew Vaughn is on the Thor movie, attention must shift inevitably to who will be playing the Norse god-cum-superhero. Rumors that have reached my own, decidedly non-Asgardian, ears indicate that Marvel Studios and their new director may be at odds when it comes to casting this lead role.
According to my first time source*, Marvel wants wrestler Triple H to play the god of thunder, while Vaughn is dead set against it. Triple H is a name that comes up in a lot of fan casting for the role, mainly because the guy really does look Thor-ish, but his acting resume is a little thin (unless you count all of his wrestling experience as acting, since all of that shit is fake and engineered to appeal to the lowest common denominator), so I can see where Vaughn is not happy with the idea of making his lead a fella whose main film experience was in Blade: Trinity.
The problem is simple: how much power does Vaughn have in this struggle? If Stardust had opened bigger, he’d certainly have more. Add to that the fact that a strike is looming, which means that Vaughn isn’t going to have a lot of time to find his perfect Thor, plus everybody’s schedules are getting quite packed as they’re trying to fit in as much last minute work as possible. If he can find his perfect Thor and convince Marvel to hire him, it won’t make a difference if the actor’s dance card is completely full from here until the strike deadline.
Thor can quite possibly be the trickiest bit of casting in the entire Marvel pantheon, since the character really needs to be physically imposing, but the actor might be called upon to deliver ersatz Shakespearian dialogue. It’s one thing to cast an Austrian bodybuilder as a mostly mute killing machine from the future, and another to cast a professional wrestler as a god who gives flowery speeches.
*ie, take this one as scuttlebutt only.
- He does have the look, but no way will people pay to see him in this movie (aside from the wrestling audience).
No actual likely candidates, or even a short list so far, other than movie/comic book fans speculation. I am sure that Avi Arad and Matthew Vaughn have a good idea who they could bring in though. Too many people seem to think it would have to be some muscle bound "hulk" from the WWF fraternity, such as Triple H. However, I think this is a non starter. Given the director involved, he will want an actor, not a simply a physical presence (as Conan was for example-Arnie was an even worse actor back then!) As Vaughn is involved, perhaps the square-jawed, blue-eyed boy, Daniel Craig could be enticed from their working together on Layer Cake?! He is a great actor, quite tall and anyone who saw Casino Royale knows he has the physical attributes. The interesting thing is: Will they get two actors to play the roles of the God of Thunder and his alter-ego, the disabled Doctor Donald Blake? It seems likely that there would be a spearate role for each- unless some CGI tinkering were involved- like that used to alter the appearances of Prof. X and Magneto on X-men 3. Also thought of Thomas Jane as a possible candidate. I just hope they avoid looking for some muscle bound mesomorph sportsman who can't act!
