Most tragic rock death

Really what I'm looking for is who you think was cut down before their prime, or had so much more to give. Not so much those that were already living off their legacy.
Who could have given us so much more?
I'll tell you correct answer later.

I will say Kurt Cobain. He could have given us many more memorable albums.

You guys are wrong. Nirvana was popular when Cobain was alive.
I am not going to try to say that Nirvana was the best band in history, or that they were the best performers, or anything like that. They did popularize the grunge phase of music and for that they deserve a spot in music history.

I'm not denying they were popular at the time and that they popularised the grunge movement. My beef with Nirvana is that a lot of people make out that they were this ground breaking, savant esque band with a talismanic quality which deserves to appreciated through the ages and that we should still listen to their albums in 50 years time a la the Beatles. They were a good commercial rock band who wrote 1 really popular song and some good album tracks.

I like all their albums pretty well.
The Beatles are one of my favorite bands and so is Nirvana, so take that for what it is worth.

I'm going to throw Janis Joplin out and see what you guys think. I believe she could have done a lot more if she hadn't OD'ed. You guys may disagree.
As far as Kurt goes, well I do think Nirvana was a reputable band, his death added a lot to the mystique, especially with the mystery surronding it. Look at Tupac, his music is still popular, but people usually talk about his death and the mystery surronding it. I don't think Nirvana would have been as huge if Kurt hadn't of died, mainly because I didn't see them sticking together much longer. They seemed to hate each other, and the other members hated Courtney.
I think death, especially a young one, instantly ups an artist's popularity. Think about it.... If Noel from Oasis died, or Brandon Flowers from the Killers, or even Chris Martin from Coldplay died, how HUGE would those bands be? They would suddenly become the greatest band in history.
After hearing parts of his album, he really could of gone onto bigger and better things.

That's probably my answer.
As for Nirvana: to the guy who said 99.9% of the world wouldn't know who Nirvana was right now if not for Kurt's death -- Jesus, dude, come on. I'm not much of a fan myself, and I fully agree with the notion that they didn't so much create their own sound as borrow from less-popular bands in the late 1980s (Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Vaselines) -- but they brought that new sound to the masses, became the biggest band in the entire world, and made it cool to play the four-chord rock we still hear everywhere today. The only band who's had even close to the same impact since is Radiohead (even Oasis, I'd say, are way, way off).
Killing himself immortalized Kurt Cobain in a lot of people's eyes, but Nevermind alone would have been enough to make him a revolutionary.
