Star Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard are close to deals to return for the prequel to their critically maligned blockbuster "The Da Vinci Code."

According to The Hollywood Reporter -- scurrying after a story first reported online -- Sony hopes to have "Angels & Demons" in front of cameras by January.

The CinemaBlend website reported earlier in the week that the Hanks and Howard deals would be record-breaking, though naturally the studio won't confirm that kind of information for the trade paper.

Akiva Goldsman still has to turn in his script based on Dan Brown's novel, which preceded "The Da Vinci Code" in the literary world, but will probably have its timeframe shifted for the big screen. In the book, code-breaking Harvard egg-head Robert Langdon (Hanks) finds himself in the midst of a series of murders connected to the Vatican and to the shady Illuminati.

I love this book. While everyone was going nuts over the Da Vinci Code, I was falling in love with this one.

It has everything that the Da Vinci Code has, but its a lot more gripping. i read it in 12 hours, including a 4 hour flight back from Egypt and cannot wait for the film version although i suspect ill be disappointed.

Yes, I agree with Giggly. I read Da Vinci first, liked that book, then read Angels and Demons.

A&D was a much more exciting book in my opinion. A lot more action, and the whole "working against the clock" story makes it a better overall read. I would encourage anyone who liked Da Vinci to read this one.

I'm sure the movie will be good, but you know what they say about movies vs. books........

I actually haven't read it as i couldn't find it but now i have i do intend to read it.

However, i think Digital Fortress is the best Dan Brown Book

Yeah, that one is good also, but not even in the same league as the Langdon books. Read Angels & Demons Mikk
