Rep Power: 37 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Boston can't take a joke I'm sure our Mass. residents know about this, but did you guys hear about the big "bomb scare" in Boston yesterday? Cartoon Network put these "devices" all over the city, which were basically just a character from the show Aqua Teen Hunger Force lit up in lights (the show is absolutely hilarious, by the way). It was basically just an advertsing campaign, that some people mistook for a terrorist threat. In response to discovering these "devices", the entire city gorund to a halt. Like, the highways, mass transit, boat traffic, etc all stopped. And, two people who were hired to put the "devices" up were arrested!!! Here's the ironic thing: These "devices" were placed in 9 other cities (including New York, by thw way), and it was only in Boston where people flipped the fuck out. Ironic thing #2: If the Boston PD had an 18-year old pothead on their staff, this whole thing probably could have been avoided. The thing that cracks me up is that this is all just a big misunderstanding, and Boston/Massachusetts officials are basically making it sound like Cartoon Network's intention was to cause a panic, calling it a "hoax" (which it is not, because the ads were not intended to be thought of as a bomb), a "publicity stunt" (which it is not, because it was simply meant to be an ad campaign, not to generate publicity from a bomb scare), and other ridiculous things that blow this situation way out of proportion. It was all a big misunderstanding. They meant no harm. Lighten up.

T"hey talked about it for the first 10-15 minutes and then did more on it later. It is pretty much just like you described, they are blaming the Turner Broadcasting people and are going to press charges/sue them cuz it cost the state/city $500k yesterday with all the police. Thank god I missed all the shit when they started busing the subway and when they shutdown the highway cuz I use that high way to get home from work. Even on the bus yesterday, on the radio they kept reminding us to make sure to tell everyone to take everything off. I think that the police are just mad that they looked like idiots when it was all said and done. Not to mention they said that the shit has been up for a few weeks i think and they even have videos off them putting them up all over Boston.

It can be a little embarrassing thatthey overreacted so much to a cartoon character. At the same time, I will give them credit for going all-out on the suspicion of terrorist activity. If it had been an actual threat, they probably would have done a good job of keeping the city safe. Kudos to them for that.

Great location for advertising?!?!? Maybe next time they should follow whatever laws there are for displaying advertisments and get the proper permits, etc. needed before just randomnly sticking shit up everywhere. |

They said they are "guerrila advertising" so they just do shit like this plastering it everywhere in the city.

Rep Power: 9 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Boston can't take a joke I doubt they notified anyone! And they put up these things with wires and battery packs sticking out and shit on bridge supports and what not. Place that someone might place a bomb to hurt many many people. Not to mention after 9/11 Boston doesn't want to risk ANYTHING. I don't think they over reacted in the least. That stupid shit bag they arrested smirked at the camera's, like to say "HAHA this is what I wanted, you to look like fools and the show gets recognition". Who ever came up with this "brilliant" campaign idea should be jobless. And on a side note, there was a false bomb threat at the local middle school as well yesterday. It turned out to just be some idiot kid joking around in the boys bathroom

I am sure someone noticed it wasn't a bomb and was like, guys it is just a prop thingy, and they were all like, we have to be sure shut everything down! So much for logic and common sense. If it cost the city that much, it is because of stupidity and poor investigating and communication. |
