Well, it's no surprise that I'm a huge fan of Axl Rose from GNR, but I don't know if I'd call him the best ever. I'm a big Jim Morrison fan so I'll go with him. Ok, he was a little out there, but the guy was nuts! Awesome, awesome talent. It's safe to say he could stir the crowd into a frenzy lol
In the last 10 years? Ugh.. I can't even think of many bands that I like from recent times. I'll say Chester Bennington of Linkin Park so everyone can come in here and scream at me.
There'll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no more pain, no more parting over there;
And forever I will be with the One who died for me,
What a day, glorious day that will be.
In terms of great frontmen, as said voice isn't particularly important, and I personally look for people who really involve the crowd and get them into a frenzy by any means necessary.
Thinking of all time...My Top 5 would be:
5. Roger Daltry (The Who) - A great performer in his peak. Strutted around very confidently and had a certain cocky aura about him. Having seen him live recently, his age has really seen him lose that previous exuberance.
4. Bon Scott (AC/DC) - How I would have loved to see him live. Fronting DC, he was a truly charismatic performer. He had a cheeky yet tough act, that really suited DC and made him shine as an entertainer. Though Angus tended to take the limelight away from him at Bon's own will.
3. Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath and solo) - Typical wild frontman. Uses outrageous stunts to get a crowd going, whether it be mooning or biting heads of helpless animals. Again I've seen him live in recent years (with Sabbath), and though nothing like his youth, he still had amazing stage presence.
2. Freddie Mercury (Queen) - An amazing performer, just have to watch him live to realise how great a frontman he was. Another man I'd have loved to see live but unfortuantely again, before my time. His involvement of the crowd was nothing short of astounding.
And finally...
1. Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) - Truly, Freddie is probably a better frontman than Plant, but combining vocals and such Plant is far superior for me and I also wanna be somewhat different. That and the fact I love Zeppelin so he's top. Another man who had an aura about him, he demanded the stage. An absolute legend. (I've sorta ran out of adjactives by this stage to describe their talents so blah...)
