So, after having only seen Episodes 1 and 2 (excuse me, I and II) in the theatres, I finally watched Episodes IV-VI on cable recently. Here are my thoughts:
The most recent movies (I-III) make a lot more sense when you actually know what happened in the original trilogy. Like, why that Senator/Chancellor guy is so important. Also, lines like "Some day, you'll be the death of me", which Obi-Wan says to Anakin in Ep. II mean more, when you see that they are foreshadowing something.
Also, the original trilogy was a LOT better than the recent films. Eps. I-III were so obsessed with special effects and stuff like that, that you lost a lot of the human aspect. Like, what made Eps. IV-VI so cool was that even though it was so futuristic, there were still the emotional, humanistic elements, like the tension between Leia and Han, Han's rebeliousness, etc. In the most recent films, all the characters were so robotic and lifeless, even Mace Windu, who was played by the ultra-emotional Sam Jackson.
Also, before seeing Return of the Jedi, I used to think that they should make another 3 movies, to make it a trilogy of trilogies. However, I think Return of the Jedi ended it perfectly, with Vader returning to the good side and dying as a hero, rather than as the ultimate villain. A perfect ending to the story, and anything else wouldnt do it justice.
I know I'm a little behind the times on these movies, but whatever...

No. I agree with you and I think the recent films did lack some story and depth, but they were still better then most crap we see these days. I think our society is too obsessed with how things look. How does she look? How does that game look? How does that film look?

I wouldn't say they were robotic, but more wooden...however this is intentional. Lucas patterns the acting and the writing style to that of the sci fi serials he watched when he was a kid (Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers). In fact, it's very much that way in the original Star Wars--but with the likes of Mark Hamill (who has said the dialogue wasn't the greatest) who took this stilted dialogue and just said it sincerely, it didn't come off as wooden. With Empire and Jedi, there were different directors and they didn't go for wooden performances.
The saga is really meant to watch as a whole, I feel. I watched the saga literally throughout the week once Episode III came out on DVD, and the entire story has so much depth. Once we get to Return of the Jedi and Anakin returns to save Luke from death, we now understand why he turns. Not only because Luke is his son, but because he had lost his mother and he had caused the death of his wife after fighting so long to cheat death.
People may say that the prequels aren't deep or meaningful or simply eye candy. But after watching the saga as a whole, I'd have to wholeheartily disagree.

I watched I-VI once and I was amazed on how everything flows. I heard after V they were going to come out with a VII-IX but then Lucas went against it saying he didn't want to do it. Maybe in 10 years if he is still alive, he will change his mind but Star Wars Series is my favorite series and it kind of sucks now not having a movie to look forward to.

There should actually be three more movies that are still to come. There time frame willbe after the original three. I am hoping they get back into the thick storylines rather than an overdose of special effects.

No. Lucas said he originally planned to do three more but then changed his mind after finishing the new three.
He said it was too tiring and he felt the stories that further the original cast were already told in books.
There are only going to be the TV shows....no more movies as of this point in time.

The movies continute into the expanded universe books. They are suprisingly different from the movies, many of them much darker.
The one I am reading now is about 30 years after Return of the Jedi. Leia turns her back on the senate, and now is fighting Luke on the opposite side of a war. She's a Jedi now too. Han sides with her. Their only remaining son (their youngest son was killed in a previous series), sides with Luke and the government. He turned to the darkside. Luke's son, Ben, is his apprenice. Han and Leia's daughter is caught inbetween loyalty to her parents, and being a commander of the senate military.
It's actually really interesting.
I LOVE the original movies. I'm not a huge fan of the new ones, due to the fact they were low on characterization, and high on special effects.

Man, I'm glad that I pretty much stick with Zahn's novels (although I'm having great difficulty finishing Vision of the Future) and some of the older titles. I definitely don't like the idea of Luke and Leia butting heads or a Solo/Skywalker turning to the dark side. I can understand almost turning, but not fulling turning.

I don't like Zahn's novel because or Mara. She's too perfect. It takes away from the other characters.
It's weird because Luke and Leia are technically the two opposing forces, but they're also the only two kind of keeping the family together. Everyone else is torn between their respective planets, governments, Jedi order, or family. And Jacen is turning the darkside which is really lame, but whatever.
What makes some of these books better than others is the characterization. That's why the Original triology was way better. The characters were really built up. You wanted to cheer for the hero Luke, and you saw the chemistry between Han and Leia.
Ewan saved the new trilogy in my opinion though. Did anyone notice the chemistry between Padme and Anakin... it was uncomfortable and embarassing to the actors. Who wants to cheer for a whiny emo kid?
Mara really isn't...perfect, however I do see what you're saying. Zahn does have a tendency to have the characters he creates (Mara, Thrawn) to take precendence over the established Star Wars characters. But I think his take on the original characters are pretty spot on.
The newer novels are....meh, not so interesting. It might just be my take on the SW universe after seeing the saga as a whole. The dark side of the Force was supposed to be destroyed and the Republic was supposed to return and not split again and Luke and Leia were supposed to lead the Republic into greatness again.
I can understand some changes, of course considering it's a continuing universe. I just don't want to see Luke and Leia at odds. But that's just me.
As far as Anakin and Padme's chemistry, they got across what they were supposed to: this was an unsteady, forbidden relationship and it was going to end badly. Yeah, there were some embarrassing lines, but it's understandable--for me at least--since the both of them had never loved before and were in a sort of puppy love. As for Anakin being whiny, well, so was Luke. He whines through A New Hope, all the way through Empire and only matures in Jedi.
