Oh, Homer, you're such a tease.

The next time you see a big superhero-style "S" insignia on your theater screen, don't be too quick to think Superman. Instead, think Simpson.

Moviegoers settling in to check out woolly mammoths and a Ray Romano/Queen Latifah romance at the premiere of 20th Century Fox's Ice Age: The Meltdown Friday were first treated to a 25-second teaser for next summer's destination film: The Simpsons Movie.

Harry Shearer, otherwise known as the voice of Mr. Burns, Smithers, Principal Skinner and, oh, about 100 other characters, confirmed last week that a big-screen version of the cult favorite, fringe favorite, intellectual favorite, intellectual fringe favorite and mainstream favorite TV show, The Simpsons, is in pre-production. But now, there is tangible proof that one of the most lauded sitcoms in history is coming to the big screen.

Move over, Dukes of Hazzard!

Anyway, as aforementioned, the animated teaser (to whet your appetite for the real, meatier trailer coming soon to a theater near you) opens with an "S" reminiscent of the Man of Steel. "Leaping his way onto the silver screen," a deep-voiced narrator intones, "the greatest hero in American history!" But of course the next scene is so much better than Superman racing a train.

It's Homer in his tighty-whities! May we quote C. Montgomery Burns when we say, "Excellent."

Anyway, so there is Homer on the couch. "I forgot what I was supposed to say," he says.

Well, what did you expect? Shakespeare?

But that's okay, because the narrator is there to remind the audience that The Simpsons Movie is due to land in theaters July 27, 2007. Go ahead, get a pen, feel free to take notes.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, creator Matt Groening and executive producer James L. Brooks are in a Los Angeles studio, right this second, hammering out the details. Well, no, not really, but the movie is currently underway at Film Roman Studios in Burbank, Calif.

Actually, it will be quite interesting to see what Groening and his crew come up with in terms of plot. Considering that The Simpsons has been on since 1989, the show has covered pretty much everything, from cheating on an I.Q. test in Season One, to Jane Goodall's monkeys in Season… 71, or something. But there is every reason to be hopeful, and that is what keeps faithful viewers tuning in every Sunday, despite the allure of folks getting extreme makeovers and 20-year-old murder cases being solved on other networks. In fact, The Simpsons scored its highest audience in three months last week, opening the show with a live-action title sequence featuring actors mirroring the 'toon family's actions, from Bart's detention to the dash for the couch.

Whether the denizens of Springfield guide yet another generation of youngsters into maturity or not, the show is set to be the only program in decades to come close (and possibly break) Gunsmoke's record-setting run of 20 seasons now that Fox has renewed the sitcom for at least two more seasons--numbers 18 and 19.

But you won't get to Season 19, scheduled to begin in the fall of 2007, without seeing The Simpsons Movie first. July 27, 2007.

Go ahead. Write it down.

Can anybody confirm this, maybe by going to watch the movie? I am a little reluctant to believe this news since its April Fools Day.

I heard on CNN earlier today that they will be airing the trailer during tonights episode of The Simpsons. That's great.

Next summer already has 2 movies I can't wait for: The Simpsons and Transformers.

Yep, it will be a live action movie(using CG of coarse) and will be directed by Michael Bay.

that sounds good. is it a whole new story using them or from the old shows or what?

It's based on the 1980s comic/cartoon series. According to the producers it will be a "RE-IMAGING of the transformers world - taking the lead from the original series, but possibly stealing parts from other series along the way.".
