| Naked Lunch Speaking of David Croneberg....has anyone seen the movie Naked Lunch?
Whether you hate David Croneberg or love him (most seem to hate him), at least he picks difficult material to tackle. I would've never though this book would get turned into a movie (it's been out for a while).
The story is impossible to explain. It's basically a drug story, not all that different from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, about William S. Burroughs, roach powder, and bug jism. It's not an exact translation of the book, not at all, but a lot of the same scenes do appear here and there.
I couldn't understand what it was about, either. I believe the story had a lot to do with the nature of writing itself. There's so much weirdness going on though that it's hard to gather the meaning.
It's really one of those movies you just have to experience. If you are looking for a plot, character development, or anything like that you're not going to find it. If you don't mind typewriters that turn into insects and start talking and the like, then you might really enjoy this.
There's some good humor in this too, as always hidden in a William S. Burroughs work. I think he appears in the movie too. Again, if you are looking for an artistic experience then this movie will appeal to you. If not, then you'll be lost and confused within minutes. |
