Sorry but that's just me. Ok, i'm off my anti Tom Cruise soap box now!

The group of nearly 36,000 mental illness physicians criticized the "War of the Worlds" actor for calling psychiatry a "pseudo science" on NBC's "Today" show on Friday, June 24, reports Reuters. "It is irresponsible for Mr. Cruise to use his movie publicity tour to promote his own ideological views and deter people with mental illness from getting the care they need," says APA President Dr. Steven Sharfstein in a statement Monday (June 27). During recent interviews to promote the Steven Spielberg-directed film, Cruise instead talked about his new love with Katie Holmes or Scientology, specifically its teachings that promote vitamins over psychotropic drugs. In particular, he criticized his former "Endless Love" co-star Brooke Shields' use of Paxil to cure her postpartum depression. "Before I was a Scientologist, I never agreed with psychiatry," Cruise tells "Today" show host Matt Lauer. "I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn't believe in psychology. ... And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science." He continued to say that antidepressants "mask the problem" and that "There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance." He even turned the tables on Lauer, criticizing the host's supposed ignorance. "Here's the problem," said Cruise. "You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do." The APA was horrified, stating, "Rigorous, published, peer-reviewed research clearly demonstrates that treatment [of mental illness] works. It is unfortunate that in the face of this remarkable scientific and clinical progress that a small number of individuals and groups persist in questioning its legitimacy."

Rep Power: 11 ![]() | I would say he's a bad actor. Horrible even. And before anyone says, "What do you know Disco, you're just html on my screen! What do you know about acting?!?!", I have worked in theatre on and off my whole life. And then you ask, "Why's he so famous then, huh? Why Disco?", to which I reply that acting ability has nothing to do with success in Hollywood. There are many, many horrible actors that have had heaps of success. Tom Cruise doesn't act. He just acts like himself. He's hot, loud, brash and self confident, and that works in the kind of mainstream Hollywood filth he appears in. |
