Twentieth Century Fox's strategy of getting Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith into theaters overseas before bootleggers could get pirated copies of the movie onto the streets apparently paid off handsomely over the weekend as moviegoers in more than 100 markets paid a record $144.7 million at the international box office during its first five days. Sith had its strongest overseas opening in the U.K., where it took in $26.8 million at 485 venues. France contributed an additional $22.3 million to the total, while Germany tossed in another $17.9 million. Overall, the movie took in about twice what Episode II -- Attack of the Clones did overseas in its debut in 2002. "
That's it from England...$26.8 million? I'm not saying thats not a lot of coin, but its roughly 1/6 of what the movie did over here. I know there's a population disparity, but still. Do you guys not like movies much, or American movies? Or perhaps Star Wars isn't as mainstream popular out there? Just curious since the France and Germany totals were even lower, and even if you combined them to even the population thing out a bit, its still kind of low.

Well it was only shown on 485 screens while here it was on over 2,000 screens, plus the US population is about 3x that of the UK.

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com)- Through Tuesday (May 24), "Star Wars: Episode 3 -- Revenge of the Sith" had made some $182.7 million at the domestic box office. However, as much filthy lucre as the prequel has taken in, the FBI is convinced it should have made more.
On Wednesday (May 25), departments of Justice and Homeland Security announced they were shutting down the BitTorrent network know as Elite Torrents after the site became one of the first peer-to-peer networks to deliver "Revenge of the Sith" to Internet pirates before its official May 19 release.
As part as what was dubbed Operation D-Elite, officers with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed warrants against as many as 10 prominent members of the network.
Elite Torrents reportedly receives roughly 8.5 million hits per day.
"Today's actions are bad news for Internet movie thieves and good news for preserving the magic of the movies," says Motion Picture Association of America President and CEO Dan Glickman. "Shutting down illegal file swapping networks like Elite Torrents is an essential part of our fight to stop movie thieves from stealing copyrighted materials. We hope and fully expect that people will spend this Memorial Day weekend sharing the motion picture experience with their families and not stealing movies from the Internet."
Glickman and the MPAA estimate that the film industry lost an estimated $3.5 million to movie piracy in 2004, a figure that could go up as high as $5.4 billion in 2005. The MPAA notes that 60 percent of all movies fail to recoup their production and marketing costs at the box office. Apparently the fact that movies now cost an average of more than $100 million to produce and market is also the fault of the pirates.
"I applaud the work of ICE, the FBI, CATCH and the San Diego Computer and Technology Crime High Tech Response Team for close coordination on Operation D-Elite," says John Malcolm, the MPAA's anti-piracy guru. "Their hard work in pursuit of these movie thieves will help preserve jobs in the entertainment industry and protect the quality of movies for everyone. Protecting the movies means protecting American ideas."

Population of the U.S is estimated at 296 million. Population of the UK is 60 million. You have 5 times our population so if it made roughly a 1/6 of the money it did in the U.S then that would figure wouldn't it?
