I thought fox would be ruling

More Proof of CBS Dominance this Week

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) The two biggest scripted shows on television went out with rather large bangs last week, as "CSI" and "Desperate Housewives" each bagged more than 30 million viewers.

The two-hour, Quentin Tarantino-directed "CSI" finale, in which the team frantically searched for Nick Stokes (George Eads), who'd been buried alive, averaged 30.7 million viewers on Thursday (May 19), dominating the night. It was the show's most-watched episode since the series' 100th in November.

CBS also says the episode delivered "CSI's" best-ever May sweeps ratings among households (18.5 rating/30 share), adults 18-49 (10.6) and adults 18-34 (8.2). It also helped the season finale of "Without a Trace" collect 21.4 million viewers, although NBC's "ER," featuring Noah Wyle's last episode as a regular, beat "Trace" in the ad-friendly 18-49 demographic.

On Sunday (May 22), the other networks more or less rolled over for "Housewives," throwing reruns up against the first-year phenomenon. It probably wasn't a bad idea, given that the ABC series pulled in its biggest audience yet. According to preliminary ratings (final numbers are released Tuesday), 30.3 million viewers watched the episode -- more than the combined total for CBS, FOX, NBC and The WB.

The show, which managed to more or less wrap up the mystery of Mary Alice Young's (Brenda Strong) suicide while leaving other questions unanswered, was the most-watched episode of an ABC series in more than five years -- since Michael J. Fox left "Spin City" in early 2000. The network says "Housewives" was also the most-watched finale of a first-year drama since "ER" ended its inaugural season in 1995.

That momentum carried into "Grey's Anatomy," which set another series high with 22.8 million viewers
