Batman Begins the Sequel?

David Goyer, the writer of Batman Begins, was recently interviewed by Premiere magazine.

In said interview he dropped a few hints on possible sequels for the new Batman films:

+ The second film would have Batman bringing down the Joker with the help
of Harvey Dent and Commish Gordon.
+ The third film would have the Joker on trial. Somewhere along the line he
would scar Dent creating Two-Face

On a related note, there have been reports that Guy Pierce is in the front running for the part of Harvey Dent and Lachy Hulme is gunning for the part of the Joker in these sequels.

My personal feelings are enough though these characters have been done before, if they pull it off with the right tone and script this time I think the film will do well. Playing it off as "camp" (See Batman & Robin) is not the way to go.

I'm not sure how I feel about these new Batman movies yet. On one hand I'd like to forget the last two Shumacher-fueled travesties ever existed. On the other, aside from the way DeVito played the "porn"guin role I loved the first two. I just have this feeling that a re-emergence of a character like Joker would either negate the original (excellent) Burton movie or just throw everything into confusion with endless debate about where the new Joker fits in with the old movie. While I would like to see more Batman, I don't know that I want to see "new" Batman that is independent from the original movies.

I agree that it definitely shouldn't be played for laughs/camp though. The old TV series had its charm but the Burton movies showed why Batman needs to be played straight.

Edit: Just realized...Goyer is the hack that butchered Blade Trinity right? Good writer of this kind of material, I just hope he's not allowed behind the camera again.

My casting wish list for the sequel would be Edward Norton for the Joker and Leiv Schiever for Harvey Dent. Just so they don't kill Joker off like in Burton's original Batman.

Indeed, Goyer's main point in this interview was that it was a big mistake killing off the Joker.

One of Batman's main points as a character from the comics is he doesn't kill.

Eh, it was an accident. :P

Besides, considering what a mess Blade Trinity was Goyer should think twice about criticising someone as talented as Burton.

Well it depends on the way you look at it. He tied a statue around his ankle and left the situation "as is". I think he pretty much knew what would happen or just didn't care.

I agree Blade Trinity was horrid. In this article they describe Goyer as "Archenemy of Wesley Snipes" lol (Snipes is currently suing the studio for forcing him to make this movie)

Yeah, I read there was a lot of drama on that set as well. Goyer tried to play it off like drama followed Snipes around like a groupie, but after seeing that movie I can totally understand Snipes being difficult. The material was "ok", there were some ideas...I don't know if Goyer adjusted the script while filming or what, but it turned out as bad as any Paul Andersen film.

Going back to the death of Joker...see, here's where my conflict about the new movies comes in. I can understand why the villains died at the end of the first two (self-contained universe), and while bringing them back would make sense if you were creating a new universe...I just don't see the Burton Batman movies as needing replacing though.

I'll probably wait til dvd for the new Batman if it seems to be any good. I'm not kidding myself here...if I went to the theaters to see it I'd wind up going to see Sith every time anyway heh.

I agree with you about the Joker. The only villian I think they need to re-visit is Two-Face. Although I love Tommy Lee Jones his take on the character was stupid and horrible. Done properly, this villian is someone who will make you gasp when he comes on screen. Not look like some side show freak.

I think they should use these new Batman films to explore villians that were done improperly or never touched.

To re-do the Joker and or Penguin is uneccessary. But Goyer has said they want you to forget the other Batman films happened in their new Gotham City universe.

Sigh...Hollywood!

Goyer's a bigger hack than I thought if he actually said that. Talk about no respect.

I'd have no problem with them revisiting the criminals from the last two, and the fact they're starting off with Scarecrow I think is original and daring...something to be commended. I like TLJ as well, but aside from the continuity problem with the Harvey Dent/Two Face character (Billy Dee Williams played him first, then TLJ? Must have been some strong acid he got hit with for that kind of change heh) was there was no buildup, no background save for a weak flashback. I'm all for exposition if its done in a way thats not intrusive to pace or condescending to my intelligence, and I think a healthy dose of it was needed for that character.

Edit: The more I think about it, the more I think I would be more accepting of a Batman Beyond franchise rather than this type of remake.
