Is this guy going to have any sort of legacy once he's retired? I really don't think so.
I mean, think of Letterman and Conan -- these guys are beloved and celebrated, and when they're gone you just know there's going to be people who talk about them like late-night legends. And then there's Johnny Carson, of course.
Leno is another guy who has also been on TV for a long, long time, but I just don't think anyone will give a shit when he's done. 100% of the comedy on his show derives from the writers or the guests, while Letterman and Conan are regarded as really funny people. What kind of clips are they going to show when he retires or dies? Headlines?
I can't stand Leno. He's a major suck-up and waste of time. He's writing is probably the best from any Late Night talk show but he's second rate when it comes to ad-lib and working with guests. He just sucks. It's painful to watch.
I think Jay will be seen as more of a transition than anything else.
I think Craig might be better than Conan too. Conan is too gimmicky. He follows the same patterns for every single show. He does the same dances every show. He talks to the hot chick guests the same way. Everything is the same. And a lot of the times his comedy just falls short.
I also hate how Conan focuses the interview on himself so much. Have you noticed how often he takes a guests story and brings it on himself? Other talk show hosts do this as well but not nearly the degree that Conan does and it's not a nightlly happening.
I guess I tire of Conan pretty quickly. Craig Ferguson, Jon Stewart, and even Jimmy Kimmel all have a lasting value to them. Every night is going to be different, at least slightly, so there seems to be a reason to watch them. I'm not sure Conan does the same.
I miss Andy. He was great on the show. He seemed to keep a constant spark going.
Whenever I watch Conan there are always parts of it that make me laugh my ass off, but I would agree with you saying that he's a very selfish interviewer. Gimmicky is a good word for him, because most of the funny things he does are either really obnoxious or really super-self-deprecating. Letterman's schtick is a lot calmer and guest-oriented, and Stewart is just like the smartest person ever. I love Conan though.
I think Craig Ferguson is 100 times funnier because of his accent, and the fact that he's not from America, and is totally out of the loop on certain subjects.
I mostly like Kimmel because he's totally unafraid of saying something offensive to the guests. Kind of like early Letterman. He's segments with that dude who goes to see the Michael Jackson fans and along with the FCC Censorship thing every Friday are two of the best segments on TV.
Kimmel just strikes me as a lot more edgier than Conan. Maybe Conan will take his game up a notch and start doing better shows once he hits primetime, I don't know.
Ferguson does great impersonations. His Bill Clinton is fantastic. I agree, the fact that he doesn't quite know much about America is what makes him great. He has a certain perspective that's priceless. And it gives him more range to say something and pretend ignorance later if he gets it all wrong.
I'm actually kind of afraid of what Conan will be like in primetime (11:35pm primetime). A lot of his show's writing is pretty off the wall, and really unlike anything you'd see on the Tonight Show (I'm thinking mostly of the weird characters).
It's kind of like music in a sense. I'd hate to see his writers get boring and mainstream.

Are you kidding? The only thing I find funny about Leno is when he makes a joke about how bad his opening sequence is going. Its certainly not a rare thing.
I don't only mean his writing on his opening sequence but with Headlines and all that other shit. Compare the segments Jay does with Letterman and it's no contest; Jay wins every time. However, Letterman is the much better show.
