Points: 42,606, Level: 90 | | The new Dr. Who quits After the first episode aired to big ratings of around ten million last Saturday night on the BBC in the UK, series star Christopher Eccleston has apparently quit the reinvigorated "Doctor Who" series citing a fear of being typecast and the gruelling shooting schedule as his reasons for departing reports The BBC.
Eccleston, whose last appearance is expected to be in a Christmas special late this year, said he was planning new projects at present. The actor played the ninth Doctor throughout the thirteen episode 2005 season that brought the show back from a sixteen year small screen hiatus (that's not including a 1996 TV movie). The second episode premieres this Saturday night with the series expected to run through til June in the UK. No word as yet on a US broadcast date.
The sad news of the departure comes on the heels of the welcome news that the network has renewed the show for a second 13-episode season. Billie Piper has agreed to return as The Doctor's companion Rose in the second season as well, she'll be starring alongside the 'Tenth Doctor' whom is expected to be "Blackpool" star David Tennant currently in talks for the role. Scottish actor Tennant recently starred in "Bright Young Things", starred alongside Eccleston in 1996's "Jude", and will next be seen playing the duplicitous Barty Crouch Jr. in the next "Harry Potter" movie.
