Field of Dreams comes to mind first as the greatest sports movie of all time. However, I think with some examination and questioning you have to wonder if this even is a sports movie. Is it? Sure, sports plays a role to the story but it's not nearly the main focus of it at all. Or does this movie simply say something about the sport through the usage of characters up until the end? I don't know.
I guess when I think of a sport movie I think of one where it has a bigger physical role. The main character would play sports for example.
That being said I'm not sure which the best sports movie of all time is. The first Rocky was a good movie.
I loved baseball movies when I was younger, so I vote for Rookie of the Year, Little Big League and Angels in the Outfield. Those were all wicked, wicked films.
Major League blows all those baseball movies out of the water
Rocky and Raging Bull were both phenomenal. I guess there's just an inherent drama in boxing that makes it a good subject for movies. "When We Were Kings", the documentary about the Ali-Foreman fight in Zaire was great also
I love Any Given Sunday, but a lot of people hate it. But nobody can deny that Al Pacino's pre-game speech is one of the best monologues in any sports movie
Blue Chips was entertaining. Cant think of many other decent basketball movies. I never saw Hoosiers
I've also never seen Field of Dreams or the Natural. And I have the 61* DVD, but havent watched it yet.
I never saw Major League. You have to understand that the movies I mentioned, which all starred adolescent kids busting ass in the MLB, were pretty fucking cool back in grade school.
What about Celtic Pride? That was a basketball move with Damon Wayans. Or Eddie, with Whoopi Goldberg? Like Mike? Air Bud? No those were all lame.
How could I forget Rudy???? I'm so ashamed of myself
As for adolescent baseball movies, did you ever see The Sandlot? Thats a great movie.
I also always wanted to see the movie about Lou Gehrig. I think its "Pride of the Yankees", but I'm not sure. The one where Gary Cooper does the "luckiest man on the face of the Earth" speech
When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fullfillment of all that has been written. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the sword and be taken as prisoners to all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
...At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
Luke 21:20-28
and that movie with Denzel Washington, where he plays a coach...Remember the Titans I believe it's called. The blacks and whites of the team were able to overcome and put aside racial issues to field a good team.
