The Marine Fails at the Box Office

In what seems to be in line with the movie industry's low-end expectations, The Marine took in an estimated $7 million at the box office on its opening weekend. The movie finished in 6th place for the weekend, just behind The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - which took in $750,000 more dollars. The movie performed a bit better on Saturday in contrast to Friday. Nonetheless, the number is considered to be a disappointment to WWE. Also, it should be interesting to see how WWE spins the movie's lackluster performance on the company website and on RAW tomorrow because they probably will somehow.

On a per-theatre basis, the The Marine's opening weekend performed below See No Evil's opening weekend. The Marine averaged $2,750 per screen (2,545 total) whereas See No Evil averaged $3,644 (1,257 total) per screen.

As said before, the movie's opening intake has to be considered a disappointment for WWE. It appears as though that Cena drew nobody outside of his core wrestling fan base, and WWE was obviously hoping that he would. The movie is expected to take a sharp drop next week because most of his core fans have probably already seen the movie and the non-Cena/wrestling fans obviously aren't going to see it. You can compare this to how TNA DVDs often debut high on the Billboard charts due to its hardcore fanbase, but then drop off quickly within the ensuing weeks. Also, the movie cost $23 million to make, not including advertising costs, thus meaning that it will have to gross at least $45-50 million all together to simply break even. If The Marine's opening weekend is any indication, it looks like the film will be a huge money loser for World Wrestling Entertainment.

Also, according to KNBC in Los Angeles, producer Joel Simon is saying that there's another John Cena film project scheduled for 2007. Simon expects the project to start shooting after WrestleMania 23.

Blade's Take: If I were them, I'd just close up shop right now and take my losses. WWE Films might have worked if wrestling was in a golden age, but it's not. This isn't the Attitude Era, people don't care about John Cena enough to go see a B level movie and this is exactly what the movie is.

With some movies a great trailer can trick the audience into going to see an otherwise worthless film, but The Marine didn't even have that. The trailer was corny as hell and not in a good way.

This isn't some Snakes on a Plane film where everyone gets the joke behind it all. There is no joke here except for the fact that WWE tried selling the movie to people as a legit action film.

Are you kidding me? The plot is worse than early 90's Steven Segal flicks. And by the way, has anyone noticed that regular by the numbers action films don't do shit anymore?

The movie theatre makes shit so expensive on a family, they just aren't going to see any crap movie anymore and to be honest, most kids would probably be embarassed to take a date to this bullshit.

You can take a girl to see a crappy horror movie, but you're not getting away with this. Unless you're married, then she still has to love you.

This movie's income will drop drastically in the next week or so, and theatres will remove it just as fast. I'm not even sure WWE Films is going to be abe to con people anymore into taking these flicks in. WWE Films is dead as can be

No Holds Barred, Mr. Nanny, 3 Ninjas...etc etc etc and now The Marine.

Their successes are too few compared with wrestling movie losses.

It wasn't even advertised, I don't think.

We have 2 12 screen theatres here and neither was showing it. That could be a problem too. No where wants to pick it up.

I can't blame them Erin lol. Yeah, people were actually thinking The Rock might get involved with WWE Films. Umm... why? The Rock makes real movies, not this garbage.
