Heath Ledger is the New Joker

Heath Ledger has been offered the role of The Joker in the latest Batman film, according to reports.

According to latinoreview.com, "the offer was officially made to Heath Ledger to star as The Joker in the Batman Begins sequel" on Wednesday.

The actor is not the only big name to have been linked to the part, with Robin Williams, Paul Bettany and Steve Buscemi all previously touted to take the role.

"I wish I could quit you Batty!!!" "I wish I could quit you!!!"

hahaha

I was hoping for Sean Penn or Crispin Glover myself but oh well.

I trust them to get this right so we'll see how it goes.

Heath Ledger seemed signed, sealed and delivered after word that he was offered the role of The Joker in the BATMAN BEGINS sequel. But now we get word from Batman-on-Film, courtesy of their "best source," that Ledger has not in fact signed a deal and instead has become reluctant to sign the contract.

"Ledger is not a lock," their source says. The same report also confirms that The Penguin will be the second villain in the film and director Christopher Nolan has also offered that part to an actor.

That actor just so happens to be the one who beat Heath Ledger in the Best Actor Oscar race last year - Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman however is even less of a lock than Ledger though as he's sending out signals that he may pass on the offer.

What leaked last week has now become official - Heath Ledger will play the The Joker in the upcoming Batman Begins sequel, titled The Dark Knight. The script will be written by Jonathan Nolan (Memento) and production is set to begin early 2007. The announcements were made yesterday by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. He says:

"Chris'[Nolan] unique vision is what made Batman Begins such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of The Dark Knight," said Robinov. "We also can't wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker."

It might be because I just woke up, but I actually have no problem with this. I've always liked Heath Ledger and "Memento" is my favorite movie of all time, so yeah, this is pretty much good news. I do, however, feel kinda bad for Paul Bettany. After being rumored for months to be the lead (and only serious) contender for the role, he just got treated like he went to Carrie's prom. He now has to go back to his pitiful life of owning every movie he's in and falling asleep on top of Jennifer Connelly. Hold on, what?
