Roman Polanski will not be able to attend the Zurich Film Festival -- which was set to honor him with a lifetime achievement award -- because he got arrested for that whole statutory rape thing he's been fleeing from for the past 30 years.
The famed director was taken into custody by Swiss authorities trying to enter Switzerland yesterday.
Polanski pled guilty in 1977 to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor (she was 13) but then fled the United States before he could be sentenced. Polanski has lived in France ever since to avoid being arrested.
There has been no timeline set as to when or if he will be extradited back to the U.S.
UPDATE -- According to Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, the U.S. Justice Department worked in conjunction with Swiss authorities in securing the arrest. According to the LA Times, they had come close to arresting Polanski several times over the past decade.

Wow took long enough, lets see if this sticks.

There'll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no more pain, no more parting over there;
And forever I will be with the One who died for me,
What a day, glorious day that will be.
Disgusting man, still doesn't take away from the great accomplishments he's achieved though. All these laws and extradition rules are silly to be honest, sure, Roman Polanski isn't a mass murderer but he still committed a crime so why wasn't this dealt with back then? It would have probably been forgotten about and he would have been able to have a glittering career without what's happening now. There were a few interesting comments flying about from his colleagues too.
There was a documentary last night about this whole deal. I barely knew who Polanski was before this, but it's fascinating stuff. He has a fascinating life. You can't help but feel a bit sorry for him when his parents were killed in the war, especially his mother via gas chamber, he managed to escape and then his wife and unborn child were killed in horrific fashion. The guy clearly must've been affected by these mentally, even if the psychiatrist during the trial said he wasn't legally mentally ill.
