I think some actors are immortalized by their death, but there are others who I think still had their breakout movie left in them. River Phoenix, by far, is the one where I feel this is especially true. He had an amazing capability to show emotion that seemed so real, and he was able to do this at a young age.
If you've ever watched The Crow as a sober adult, it's hard not to laugh a bit at Brandon Lee's performance in that movie... That's not to say he couldn't have been a big star, but his acting ability left something to be desired.
Unrelated to Lee (but related to the topic), one of my all-time fave films is a Russian drama called To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. (or The Return) about two young brothers whose disturbed father returns after many years and takes them on a trip. In an early scene in the movie, the boys are cliff-jumping into a lake; very soon after the completion of filming, one of the two young actors actually drowned in the same lake...

I actually just watched The Crow on Netflix a few weeks ago. He was awful, absolutely awful, but he was still taken far too young and the way it happened really was what motivated me to add him on my list.
