Two warring factions of Robots from the planet Cybertron.

They were fighting over a limited supply of what keeps them going which are little enery cubes called Energon. (sp?)

When there planet runs dry of this stuff they seek the next biggest source of it which happens to be Earth.

So you have the Autobots (Good Guys) lead by Optimus Prime against the Decepticons (Bad Guys) lead by Megatron.

The cartoons were about the war between the two sides trying to get the Energon off of Earth. The humans were helping the Autobots.

At least that's all I remember of it. lol
