For in a twist to rival the plot of a Jane Austen novel, I can reveal that the couple are engaged to be married. In one of the best-kept secrets of the celebrity world, the Hollywood leading man and the beautiful heiress daughter of billionaire Sir James Goldsmith confined their news to family and a close circle of their most trusted friends. Remarkably, that news has been kept under wraps for six months. I understand that the Four Weddings And A Funeral star, 45, proposed to his 32-year-old fiancÈe at Christmas. Now friends of the couple have spoken out, angered by reports that suggest the relationship has been wrecked by the actor's continuing friendship with his former love Elizabeth Hurley. Informed sources tell me that Grant proposed during a holiday in Barbados, presenting Jemima with a stunning engagement ring of sapphire and diamonds. "It was romantic: he went down on one knee," I am told. I understand that Jemima's widowed mother, Lady Annabel Goldsmith, and Grant's widower father James formally heard the news over the Christmas holiday. Jemima's sons Sulaiman and Qasim, by her marriage to former Pakistan cricketer Imran Khan, also know. And friends who were informed have until now respected the couple's wishes for silence on the matter. I first revealed Grant and Jemima's affair two years ago. But ever since, they have been beset by claims that Grant's former love was driving a wedge between them. A close friend of the couple tells me of the hush-hush nature of the engagement: "They had their own reasons - partly Hugh's filming commitments in America - but this latest speculation has gone too far. "Everyone was thrilled and we expected them to make an announcement in due course. Quite frankly, even they thought it would have got out by now. In fact, the secrecy added to the romance of it all." No doubt part of the mystery has been fired by the absence of the ring on Jemima's finger when she is out in public. But the friend tells me: "I can assure you it's real - I've seen it and I've seen her wearing it." Last night, the actor and his fiancee were together in New York by themselves. | |
