The Los Angeles Times talked to Dan Aykroyd about Ghostbusters 3 that is in development at Columbia Pictures. Here are several excerpts:
Aykroyd said Sigourney Weaver is on board now, as are the original squad of ectoplasmic specialists -- Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson.
"We could be in production by winter."
Aykroyd said he wishes Ivan Reitman would return to direct the third film in the series but that he's "too busy as a mega-producer" to take it on; his second choice is Ramis, who, of course, co-wrote the first two "Ghostbusters" films with Aykroyd and has numerous directing credits, most notably "Groundhog Day" and "Analyze This."
The details of story are still in play, but Aykroyd said he's hoping for a five-member "new generation" team with several female members. "I'd like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let's revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let's pass it on to a new generation."
This is either going to be really good, or bad.

I'm going to go with really bad. I liked the first idea better of a all CGI Ghostbusters. I applaud them for what they want to do, but at the same time even the second one wasn't all that good compared to the first. Unless they went really dark I just don't see it working. I realize it's more comedy than horror even with "ghosts", but it's still only for the older generation to come out and see it. I don't think there are to many younger fans of the show that care. Hell the first one is 25 years old. It will be interesting to see what they do but I think it will bomb big time. They won't get the numbers they are going to hope for. If they're lucky it will hit big it's opening weekend. After that I don't see it staying in the top 5.

I agree that the concept of a "passing of the torch" movie sounds awful, but I will gaurantee right now that this will be a box office smash. Ghostbusters has survived the test of time and is loved by all generations. I have friends who weren't even alive when the second one came out who absolutely adore it. As much as it sounds like it's gonna suck balls, it'll suck balls while making a shitload of cash.

Oh it's definitely going to be a cash cow. But they better get that cash on opening weekend because I think after that it will sink faster than the titanic.
Hey, put Ramis, Akyroyd, Murray, and Hudson together in a room and film it, and I'll be there to watch it. The first GB was frickin amazing, but the second one really lagged in my mind (and most seem to agree). I think if anything, the second movie tarnished the legacy of the Ghostbusters Franchise, so what's one more "for the road"? I'd be interested in how the Ghostbusters have evolved since the last one like 15+ years ago...but I'm not all that interested in seeing a new cast takeover. If anything, end the series at 3. Because to me, the Ghostbusters will always be Egon, Ray, Venkman, and Winston.
I see no reason (other than money) to hand over the reigns to a new cast. I'd rather watch four aging, balding, fat, out of shape guys chasing CGI ghosts than she a group of youngsters show them up and then carry on the series.

ComingSoon.net just got off the phone with filmmaker Harold Ramis, always a wonderful and charming interview subject for sure. We talked a little about his new movie Year One, starring Jack Black and Michael Cera, which hits theaters next week, plus he's also being honored with a Screenwriting Tribute and taking part in an All-Star Comedy panel at this year's Nantucket Film Festival. (Oh, and we should mention that panel includes Ben Stiller, Peter Farrelly and John Hamburg, too!)
There's been a lot of talk lately about the planned Ghostbusters 3, as the original movie celebrates its 25th Anniversary and having been twenty years since the last installment. Ramis has been developing the three-quel along with his Year One writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, best known as part of the writing staff on "The Office," so we asked him for a brief update.
"I wrote the story for the new movie with them, and Dan and I've been consulting. We're just waiting to see a first draft and where we are," Ramis told us, although he's very optimistic it will happen with Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson returning as well. "Everyone says they'll do it, they've all said they'll do it. No one has signed anything yet--we haven't signed anything either--but there's the spirit of willingness in the air."
Last week, Ivan Reitman was asked by MTV about his involvement in the project, but Ramis isn't so sure Reitman would want to direct it, even though it's obviously too early to tell. "I don't think he wants to; I'm not sure I want to (direct). It's just a lot of open questions. Until we see a script, I don't think anyone really knows how they feel about it. Everyone's open to doing it, that's the main thing, that's what got it moving forward."
He did confirm that there will be a younger cast donning the backpacks and outfits with the original cast acting more as mentors to them. "Oh, yeah. There will be new Ghostbusters. It's not about us running around. We'll be introducing new people."
Look for our full interview with Mr. Ramis sometime next week. In the meantime, let us know if you're a fan of the original "Ghostbusters" movies and might be interested in the return of the franchise.
Updated news on this. Hmm. Sounds decent.
