Favourite Movie Heroes?

Doubt this'll get much attention as the Villains thread, but I felt this was one worth making anyway.

McMurphy - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
One character that is definitely not outshined by the villain. The thing I find most interesting about him is that he's a con, a rapist, violent and a cheat, but in a way he's like the anti-Jesus. He's a saviour for the rest of the mental patients because he takes them away from their monotonous lives where they live in fear of Nurse Ratched and is able to show them a good time. He is able to bring down the system just with his fun-loving personality and his ability to bring out the best in people, or worst in the Nurse's case. In the end, he is a tragic character as, like a saviour, he sacrifices himself for the good of everyone else and is able to turn the patients into real men. Jack Nicholson's finest performance, if you ask me.

Vito Corleone - The Godfather, The Godfather Part II
Unlike his son, he is able to find the perfect balance between business and personal, as he is highly successful in both. Although Michael exceeded him in business by becoming extremely rich, he basically unwillingly destroyed his family. There is just something very likeable about Don Corleone. He may look like a gentle old man, but he is incredibly smart about his business and knows what is right, even if it upsets others. It doesn't hurt that he was played by two of the best actors ever, Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro. In Part II, when his background and rise to the top is explored, it's really easy to get into his character, knowing what will become of him. But there's also the intensity of the revenge story and getting the chance to murder the man who destroyed his family.

The Man With No Name - A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good The Bad & The Ugly
Joe, Manco or Blondie, whatever you want to call him. He was still undoubtedly one of Clint Eastwood's finest roles. Rarely revealing his feelings, you could always get a sense just by looking in his eyes. He is the first character I think of when the term anti-hero is used. In the first film, he kills people and tricks two gangs in hopes of making a large profit from it, but the people he kills are those who should have it coming to him, so in a way it's alright. But throughout the films, we see the morality of him being very subtley revealed. In Fistful, he inadvertantly causes a gang to be slaughtered violently by the other gang, and you can just tell from the look on his face that it upsets him, even if the look is subtle. But in the same film, he rescues a family in peril because he "knew someone like you once, there was no one there to help". A small indication of his background, perhaps. Along with "It's hard to want something you don't understand", referring to peace. As the trilogy goes on, he experiences different friendships and seems to learn more about the morality of killing. Seeing the civil war certainly changed him, as he helps out a dying soldier and he spares Tuco's life in the Trios Duel, one of the best scenes ever. It seemed, at least to me, that killing Angel Eyes was to be his last kill. For one thing, he has $100,000 to live the rest of his life on, so he won't need to be a bounty killer anymore, and Angel Eyes would have killed him anyway.
"Dirty" Harry Callahan - Dirty Harry
Why is he called Dirty Harry? Is it because he gets every dirty job that comes along, or because he supposedly hates everyone? Or could it be that he is considered a dirty cop in a society that will let a murdering, child rapist go free just because Harry didn't have a warrant? My second favourite Clint Eastwood character and he really is just...cool. Every line is delivered well and the cool lines are delivered excellent. Then there's the epic lines like the famous "You gotta ask yourself one question, 'Do I feel lucky?', well do you, punk?" which I don't have to explain why they're classic. It's hard not to root for Harry to catch the sniper, Scorpio, when he is being held back by an incompetent police force and Catch-22-like laws.

imo.

I'll be back with more but unlike the villains, not many spring to mind. I'll have to have a good think about it.

Also, great call on McMurphy. I love that character. He's not a rapist though is he? I thought it was statutory rape which isn't actually rape lol.

Oh yeah, just slipped my mind. But I remember he was convicted of something like sexual assault, or whatever.

Re: Favourite Movie Heroes?

This might be a controversial one..

Snake Plissken - Escape From New York/Escape From LA

I've enjoyed these films ever since I can remember. After watching them again recently, Escape from LA doesn't hold up so well due to the awful special effects, but Escape From New York is still a very good film imo. Snake is a great anti-hero. Considering his character, he shouldn't be likeable in the least, but he's just too cool not to like. He doesn't care about anyone or anything but you still buy into him as a heroic figure.

Charles Bronson's great portrayal as an architect that turns to violence to avenge his wife. Saved countless ghettos.

He was the hero of the young generation. Gave kids the inspiration to have fun and live live and dance on floats.

Hey, that is a good pick. Now that I think of it, Issac Hayes was a great villain.

Re: Favourite Movie Heroes?

John Cusack.- Pick a movie he is in and I like it. He's one of my favorite actors and I can honestly say that anything he's been in has been golden for me. Some of my favorites are Grosse Pointe Blank, Say Anything and Better Off Dead. There are many more though.

Re: Favourite Movie Heroes?

^ High Fidelity is the best Cusack movie, but that is my opinion. Grosse Point was good, and it was weird to see Dan Akroyd as a villain
