In the midst of all the horror remakes and re-imaginings (which is really just a fancy term for remakes) comes the new version of Friday the 13th. Between the recent popularity of horror remakes and the lack of anything more interesting in theatres, the movie raked in over $42 million in its first weekend, more than the original film made in its entire run.
It's also a sum more than twice the film's budget. For those of you keeping score at home that's the industry equivalent of being given an instant green light for sequel release. The next viable Friday the 13th is August 2010. If that sounds too soon, remember that they're currently cranking out Saw films faster than Angelina Jolie is adding kids to her family.

I guess it's up to A Nightmare On Elm Street now to prove it's worth. Leatherface, Michael Myers and now Jason have all debuted number 1 for their remakes.

Yeah, I'm guessing a lot of couples went to see it on Friday, it would be an easy date and a lot of people like these kinds of films. I really hope Nightmare on Elm St. can follow it up...as Freddy is my favorite out of the top 3.

Never underestimate the power of familiarity. Movie-goers know exactly what they will get when they walk into a Friday the 13th film, and this one delivered exactly what you expect.
People always question why there is so little originality in Hollywood anymore... And this is a perfect example of why Hollywood keeps reusing old ideas. Because familiarity works. Whether its with character, stories, or - most often - stars... its probably the surest way for a film to make money.
