Former stripper Anna Nicole Smith was mourning the loss of her 20-year-old son yesterday - three days after giving birth to the daughter she has always longed for.
Daniel Smith had been with his mother and visited his baby sister just hours before his death in the Bahamas, where they had been staying.
An investigation into the cause of his mysterious death has been launched but police are releasing few details.
Walter Evans, a spokesman for the Royal Bahamian Police Force, would not even confirm Daniel's death.
He would only say the son of an "undisclosed celebrity" had been found in a room of the private doctor's Hospital in Nassau.
It is believed to be the same hospital where his mother gave birth.
"We have yet to learn the cause of death but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor," Smith's lawyer Howard K Stern said in the statement.
"Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being."
A statement on her official website said: "On September 7th Anna Nicole gave birth to a healthy 6 pound, 9 ounce baby girl.
"Her son Daniel was in the Bahamas with her to share in the joy of his baby sister when he passed away suddenly on the morning of September 10th. We have yet to learn the cause of death but do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor. Anna Nicole is absolutely devastated by the loss of her son. He was her pride and joy and an amazing human being."
Daniel, whose father Billy was Nicole Smith's first husband, appeared in his 38-year-old mother's reality TV series, The Anna Nicole Show.
Nicole Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, yesterday said she was "absolutely devastated" at the loss of her grandson.
"That boy meant the world to me," said Mrs Hart, who helped raised Daniel. "I just can't believe this terrible news. I've still no idea what happened.
"Vickie (her real name) always wanted a little girl but for this terrible tragedy to happen so soon after having a healthy little baby daughter is unbelievable."
She said Nicole Smith idolised 'Danny' but had always longed for a daughter.
The tragic turn of events has come four months after Nicole Smith won the latest round of her long-running court battle that could eventually see her become richer than the Queen.
The blonde star has been given the right to fight for half of her late oil baron husband's US$800 million fortune in the US Supreme Court.
If she wins, her fortune will be US$100m more than the Queen's US$300m.
The US Supreme Court said the former Playboy Playmate of the Year should have a fresh chance to pursue her claim in federal court.
She was 26 when she married 89-year-old wheelchair-bound oil tycoon J Howard Marshall II in 1994. When they met two years earlier, she was working as a topless dancer in a club in Houston, Texas.
Marshall's death 14 months later triggered a legal battle between Nicole Smith and Marshall's son Pierce, who died unexpectedly earlier this year, aged 68.
She claimed her husband promised half of his estate, but Pierce Marshall said his father only wanted her to have the US$3m-worth of gifts she received in 1994.
Legal experts say Nicole Smith, who has not received any money from her late husband's estate since his death in 1995, was now looking the likely winner of the bitter battle over her late husband's fortune.
In a string of court battles, she has accused Pierce of killing his father and trying to kill her. He alleges she was a gold digger who only married his father for money.
