Rep Power: 10 | Polly Filla off with a bang Quote:
The Queen of Queens is stepping out to spread her wings.
Colin McLean's drag persona Polly Filla will be missed in entertainment circles when he takes his frocks to Melbourne in a week.
Slightly frazzled at the prospect of shipping about 500 outfits across the Tasman, the Wellington costume designer and performer is looking forward to taking on the Australian drag circuit.
"I'm a big fish in a small pond. I really want to get out of my depth."
Wellington has been good to Polly since she first put her heels on 10 years ago, Mr McLean says, but it has become too repetitive for the drag artist.
With four Wellington Cup Queen of the Carnival fashion crowns and three years running as the official New Year's Eve MC in Civic Square, he says the challenge has gone and he is starting to get lazy.
"I'm at the top of my game here and have been for five years. I'm just clocking up the number of times I can do the same thing."
Melbourne's lure of numerous professional theatres and a more expansive collection of gay clubs means more work and play for the 28-year-old. "And I haven't done my OE yet!"
Her departure will provide opportunities for Wellington's other drag queens, he says.
Polly Filla will "go out with a big bang", all of Wellington's fellow drag queens joining her for a five-hour showcase sendoff at Subnine tonight.
After that comes the formidable task of packing. He is taking everything – just in case.
"You never know when you might need that 5cm of sequins you just threw out!"
