Rep Power: 4 | Looking Back At Raw - June 5, 2006 Credit: PWInsider Quote:
On what should have been the "set up Sunday's ECW PPV" edition of Raw, we instead got a mish mosh of a show that had all the wrong focus on ECW, when then bothered to focus on them at all, and way too much of Vince McMahon and his wrinkly I-don't-care-what-he-thinks-he's-a-sixty-year-old-grandfather-with-saggy-flesh ass. Ugh. This was one of the worst Raws in a long, long time, both for what the show itself was and also for the damage it's done to the new brand that they are launching. It's truly amazing how any group of adults could book a show this bad but they continue to do so. For the fans who will only watch Raw and no other WWE shows, they did nothing to get their money on Sunday. Brilliant job Vince, you sure do know what you are doing. But hey, at least you will get an extra five bucks from those of us who do buy the show, right? Plusses: I'll list Carlito vs. Shelton here. They didn't really have a great match, but on this show I need something positive to look for so I will go with the fact that they could potentially have a good program. ... I loved Kurt Angle's promo, especially early on before it began to drag. It was easily the best part of the show. That's it. There was some other stuff that wasn't bad, but that doesn't make it a plus. Minuses: I know they probably thought that they were getting ECW over as "rebels" by having them gang attack John Cena, but it just made them look like heels (and not overly competent ones either) when they had a bunch of ECW guys attack John Cena after he put over the company. Then, Sabu missed his spot off the top rope AND the ECW guys ran from a bunch of WWE B teamers. Yeah, ECW sure does look strong now huh? ... I hate when they book bits like The Spirit Squad killing Big Show and costing HHH the match, even though it's obvious why they did it. The ref should know what's going on and not be such a dope to fall victim to the "evil plan". And then, Triple H went into Vince's office like it was the first time this has ever happened, which everyone in the building knew was a joke. What I hate even more is that they seem to book that angle so often and the sucker ref falls for it every time. Stuff like this is why so many people hate wrestling, because it insults their intelligence. It's also why so many people left when Chris Kreski left the writing team. Wrestling can be goofy fun and not insult your intelligence at the same time, but Vince just doesn't want to do that. ... Making fun of the late Willie Stargell was just totally uncool and classless. Whoever wrote that should be flogged and then forced to watch a continuous looped tape of Great Khali matches for a year. ... Again, I am begging WWE for some decent wrestling on Raw. I am not even asking for good wrestling any more, I just want to see something decent. They have definitely fallen into a pattern of doing 5 minute matches where not much happens and it's BORING. ... The Triple H-Vince angle? Horrible, just horrible. I don't blame HHH one bit either. He did as much as he could with the crap that was written, but once again it was just Vince overkill. I am so sick of seeing a 60 year-old fossil running around the ring in girl's underwear. What I am even more sick of is having to write things like that last sentence in this column! Vince used to be one of my favorite characters in the business and now I hate seeing him on my TV. He has done a fabulous job of killing his character. Way to go Vinnie Mac. ... The promotion for tomorrow's special was wretched. They announced ONE match, a battle royal, for the show. Yeah, that will grab the audience. Then, right after the show goes off the air, they put two more matches up on WWE.com. If it doesn't seem like they want ECW to fail, then they are just totally clueless. The scary thing is I am not exactly sure which it is. A Mixture Of Both: On the one hand, they mentioned ECW a lot and also talked about Sunday's PPV. That was a step in the right direction except that they didn't do anything to make me, as an ECW fan, want to buy it. Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton? That is a Smackdown match (but it was a cool surprise to have Orton return, just not for an ECW PPV). Who is The Sandman wrestling? Or Balls Mahoney? And why did we have to wait until the very end of Raw to hear that Sabu will be wrestling Rey Mysterio at the PPV? Yeah, they may push the PPV on Wednesday, but it's not exactly like they did a great job promoting the special either (see above). By the end of the night, all of the talk of WWE being committed to making ECW succeed rang true, but in the wrong way. By that, I mean that it sure looks like it will be a true WWE brand in that it's all over the place and logic doesn't really matter, just like Raw. That isn't what I was hoping for when they announced the return of the brand. Thanks WWE. Rhetorical and Unanswered Questions:
When Raw opened, was I the only one who wondered if Triple H practiced puckering up for Vinnie Mac on his wife?
When Shane said he had no desire to see his dad's "alabaster keister", did he speak for, well, ALL OF US?
Jeez, doesn't it show that Coach has no authority when Paul Heyman, who "doesn't even work on Raw", gets to cut him off?
And boy, isn't Coach happy to be in his great new role of a doormat?
When the announcers said that RVD was excited and wanted to get his name on the WWE Title contract, why the hell wouldn't he?
When, exactly, did John Cena step into a cage with pit bulls to defend the WWE belt?
After John Cena actually put over ECW, why did WWE have to go and make ECW heel by having the guys beat him down?
Could Sabu have possibly missed the spot off of the top rope any worse than he did?
And, can you believe they actually showed it again and again on replay?
Who's bright idea was it to have Harry Smith debut on Raw running down to the ring with 10 other guys?
Who else hates non-title matches?
Does anyone really believe that Jim Ross has viewed "See No Evil" twice?
And if he has, doesn't he really need football season to start, like yesterday?
Did I really hear Vince tell HHH there was nothing wrong with kissing his ass, as if it were a normal thing to tell someone?
Who writes this crap anyway?
What was with using "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor" for ECW anyway?
So, if Triple H's choice were to either kiss Vince's ass or never get a title match again, why didn't he just take Paul Heyman up on his offer from last week and jump to ECW?
Anyone else looking forward to a Hacksaw Duggan-Umaga classic?
Didn't it make sense to have Kurt Angle come out in Pittsburgh?
Did you notice that Randy Orton came back before his two month suspension expired?
What kind of message does that send to the talent?
Randy Orton vs. Kurt Angle at ECW ONS? WHAT THE F***???????????
I mean, does anything say ECW any less than that match?
How fitting was it than when Murdoch began to brag what the victory over Kane means to him and Cade, they turned off his mic and cut to the back?
When JR said that Charlie Haas was outsmarted by Melina and Nitro, was I the only one thinking, "Well, that isn't saying much since he wasn't bright enough to see Lilian leaving the ring when he ran into her and knocked her to the floor"?
And jeez, shouldn't someone slap Haas upside the head for that moment of stupidity?
Don't you hate when people, like Beth Phoenix, turn their back on their opponents?
Could you tell that Vince liked saying the word "ass-cial"?
What does it say when the preview for Dusty Rhodes' DVD was better than anything on Raw?
Did I really hear Jerry Lawler call someone else a bad announcer?
Wasn't JR happy that less than a month back on TV, he is reminded about being the Vinnie Mac ass club?
Could Shane be any more embarrassed, having to look at his dad's ass?
What's with Vince wearing a thong anyway?
Did anyone really think that Triple H wasn't smart enough to switch water bottles with Shane?
