Official Title: Pirates Of The Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides
Quote:
At the D23 Expo in Los Angeles this weekend, Disney is regaling journalists and fans with scoops about their upcoming projects as well as looks at memorabilia from the old ones. They've also used the opportunity to announce the official title for one of the most anticipated movies they have coming out, the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film.
So the fourth film, going into production soon, will be called Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides. What on earth that means, we probably won't find out until more production details come to life. But Pirates fans can chew on that for now, and decide for themselves if it fits in with the Pirates 4 plot details scoop we got over two years ago.
In more minor Disney news, the official title for the Jason Segel-Nicholas Stoller Muppets movie appears to be The Cheapest Muppets Movie Ever Made. I like the tongue-in-cheek humor that suggests, but are they really not giving Segel a Henson-sized budget? For shame!

Sweet news.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 In Trouble, Johnny Depp's Involvement Uncertain
Quote:
Disney lost an executive this weekend and it may torpedo the next Pirates movie. The suit in question is Dick Cook, who abruptly left his job as the long time head of Walt Disney Studios
on Friday. Unfortunately for Pirates of the Caribbean fans not only was he a big deal at Disney he was, apparently, the only reason Johnny Depp played Captain Jack Sparrow.
Speaking to the LA Times Depp says of Cook, “He's instantly trustworthy. And you generally don't meet people at the studios you trust.” With or without Cook, Johnny technically already has a done deal to star in a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie but now he says of his involvement in it “There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment.” Whether he does the fourth movie now seems to depend not on whether he has a deal, but whether he has a script and whether he feels “enthusiastic” about doing it.
Or, maybe Johnny’s just trying to help Dick Cook getting his job back by vaguely threatening to torpedo Disney’s biggest cash cow. There is no Pirates of the Caribbean 4 without Johnny Depp and there is no money to buy Disney executives new Ferraris without a Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Captain Jack Sparrow swings a big sword at Disney.

Not sure how reliable but would be big news.

Powers and Rossio on Pirates of the Caribbean 4
Source:Los Angeles Times, Empire Online
October 7, 2009

The day that the title of the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film was announced to be Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, we posted an article in which we talked about the speculation that the movie would be based on author Tim Powers' 1987 novel with the same name about pirates and the Fountain of Youth.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Powers confirms that Disney optioned the book almost three years ago. But what will they use from the book? Here's a clip:
"I've watched all the movies several times, of course, and I think the clear thing they would use is the trip to the Fountain of Youth," Powers said. "My main character doesn't overlap with Jack Sparrow at all [in personality or circumstance]; they're totally different characters. I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. The only thing I feel certain they will hold on to is the Fountain of Youth since they telegraphed that at the end of the last movie."
You can read more of his comments here. Empire magazine also has more quotes from co-writer Terry Rossio who says the script isn't necessarily based on the book but that they do use elements of the novel:
"We wanted to do a story about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth, and Tim Powers wrote a book about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth... it just turns out that to do that story you would need that book. It's a brilliant and Tim Powers is an amazing writer - and it's a great title. It allows us to draw material from that universe and his expertise."
The studio is targeting a Summer 2011 release for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
