Release Date: December 17, 2010 Studio: Columbia Pictures (Sony) Director: Not Available Screenwriter: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg Starring: Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Jay Chou, Edward James Olmos Genre: Action, Adventure, Crime MPAA Rating: Not Available Official Website: SonyPictures.com Plot Summary: "The Green Hornet" made his debut on January 31, 1936 on WXYZ Detroit, the creation of the station's George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, who also created the Lone Ranger. The series, which ran until 1952 on the Mutual and NBC Blue networks, followed the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy whose life is changed when he inherits his father's crusading newspaper, The Daily Sentinel. He saves the life of Kato, a Japanese man with incredible technical and martial-arts skills, who becomes Britt's closest ally -- and transforms Britt's car into the supercharged Black Beauty, which gives them an edge as they search for evidence to expose the city's underworld in the newspaper. When Britt and Kato witness a brutal mob hit, Britt invents his secret identity -- taking his name from his powerful car's defective horn. A skilled fighter and expert marksman, the Green Hornet uses two special, non-lethal guns to subdue criminals: one fires a potent knock-out gas while the other produces the "Hornet's Sting" -- an electric shock.
The Green Hornet is a masked fictional crime fighter. Originally created by Fran Striker for an American old-time radio program in the 1930s, the character has appeared in other media as well, including film serials in the 1940s, a network television program in the 1960s, and multiple comic book series from the 1940s to the 1990s. Though various incarnations sometimes change details, in most incarnations the Green Hornet is Britt (or "Brit") Reid, a newspaper publisher by day who by night goes out in his masked "Green Hornet" identity to fight crime as a vigilante, accompanied by his similarly masked Asian manservant Kato and driving a car, equipped with advanced technology, called "Black Beauty". The Green Hornet is often portrayed as a fair-to-above average hand-to-hand combatant and is often armed with a gun that sprays knock-out gas (an electric stun weapon called the "hornet's sting" was added to his arsenal in the TV series).
Originally, the show was to be called The Hornet, but the name was changed to The Green Hornet so that it could be more easily trademarked. The color was chosen because green hornets were reputed to be the angriest.
One relatively minor aspect of the character which tends to be given limited exposure in the actual productions is his blood relationship to The Lone Ranger, another character created by Striker. The Lone Ranger's nephew was Dan Reid. In the Green Hornet radio shows, the Hornet's father was likewise named Dan Reid, making the hero the Ranger's grand-nephew.
The Western property was sold to another company in the 1950s, a legal complication that resulted in the identity of the Masked Rider of the Plains being obscured when it has been dealt with at all in Green Hornet depictions (though a comic book from NOW Comics later displayed the Hornet's living room as being decorated with a painting of a man dressed very similarly to the Lone Ranger; the radio series had expressly indicated the presence of such a portrait there).
It appears the rumors of the demise of Seth Rogen’s Green Hornet were greatly exaggerated. I should have gone with my gut on this one. At the same time that everyone (including us) were running stories on the studio hanging up the hat on Green Hornet, I noticed the movie was still listed as an active production in the most recent Production Weekly. I thought it odd for a movie to be dead and have an anticipated shooting date at the same time, but who was I to question it? After all, the originating site with the news had pretty good support for the story.
It sounds like Green Hornet is still an active project, with Stephen Chow telling Ain’t It Cool and Seth Rogen himself telling CHUD the movie is still a go. In fact, Rogen expects the movie to hit the original release date if a director is hired soon - something he calls a distinct possibility.
The really good news about all of this, aside from the movie still being in production, is that Chow says he has not dropped completely off the movie as rumors suggested. He won’t be directing, but he is still planning on playing Kato.
I don’t know why I’m all excited about The Green Hornet. It’s a franchise that has never gotten me tremendously excited. I think it’s the notion of someone like Seth Rogen doing something outside the realm of what we’ve seen him do before. Regardless, for right now it sounds like The Green Hornet is still on the radar.

"Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog!" Gondry said.

Seth Rogen's movie based on the pulp and television hero The Green Hornet has been moved from its original date of July 7, 2010 to its new date of December 17, 2010, according to Box Office Mojo.
No reason for the move was given, but one can presume it's to give the movie more time for post-production--principal photography hasn't begun yet--and to get it away from Robert Rodriguez's Predators relaunch.
Currently, Sony had set a Dec. 17, 2010 release date for the 3D Smurfs movie, which one assumes will be moved itself, since currently, it's up against Warner Bros.' animated Yogi Bear movie.
UPDATE: HitFix.com has gotten in touch with Seth Rogen for a reaction/explanation of the delay, and Rogen told them that he and his creative partners Evan Goldberg and director Michel Gondry are "relieved and psyched about the change" because it does give them more time to finish and promote the movie, including an appearance at next year's Comic-Con.
Green Hornet’s release date may have been bumped back a few months, but the good news is that hasn’t slowed down the film’s production process. Sony announced today that filming has commenced on The Green Hornet and yep, it’s still directed by Michel Gondry and starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou and Cameron Diaz.
That’s particularly good news considering this project’s spotty history of false starts and failed good intentions. It’s been a long road getting The Green Hornet made but it looks like, at last, this thing is really getting done.
As of a few days ago it’s slated for a December 17, 2010 release. They’ve got plenty of time to get it right.
