I would almost be surprised if they weren't trying to make it happen. The show ended how long ago, but its still on TV and people still remember it. I mean, his name basically became a verb!

We’ve heard rumors of this, but tonight SNL star Will Forte confirmed that not only is a movie version of his popular “MacGruber” sketch happening, he’s already finished writing it.
Forte appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, introed with a MacGruber clip and played on stage to the tune of the MacGruber theme song. Fallon wasted no time in asking whether there’d be a MacGruber movie and Forte confirmed, “John Solomon, Jorma Taccone, and I just finished writing it. We’re gonna make it in Albuquerque. It’s me and Kirsten Wiig and cast to be determined.”
So this means bad hair and plenty of explosions right? Maybe not. Forte says “It’s maybe a little different than people are thinking.”
There was a time, back in SNL’s 90s golden age, when they cranked out movies based on popular characters at a ridiculous pace. Sometimes it worked and we got Wayne’s World, most of the time it didn’t, and we got Stuart Saves His Family. But it’s been more than ten years since we’ve had a real Saturday Night Live movie. Now that SNL is suddenly relevant again, it looks like Lorne Michaels has the big screen bug up his ass again.
In case you’ve missed out on the genius that is MacGruber, I’ve include a few of his best moments embedded below. It’s hilarious as a short sketch but a MacGuyver parody doesn’t really seem like something that lends itself to a feature length movie, and besides, doesn’t MacGruber stop being funny when Will Forte fails to kill himself in the first sixty seconds? For MacGruber to work, Will Forte must die, and die fast.

I'm in.

There's no point in this. Can you really write an entire movie out of a skit that's intended to last fifteen seconds and isn't that funny in the first place? Meh.

This is not movie worthy. It's funny for 15 seconds every month or two. I don't watch SNL anymore but the few times I have tuned in they had this sketch.
You know Jorma Taccone as the guy who played Chaka in Land of the Lost. And you know MacGruber as the SNL sketch that is always surprisingly funny, mostly because it usually lasts under 2 minutes. And now, somehow, those two things are coming together for-- my God-- MacGruber the movie.
We already reported that the movie was happening, and that MacGruber himself Will Forte was writing the script with Taccone and John Solomon. But now Production Weekly is reporting that MacGruber starts filming in New Mexico next month, with Jorma Taccone at the helm.
Taccone, to give credit where it's due, has directed all of the previous "MacGruber" sketches on SNL. But for a movie that will presumably be action-heavy, wouldn't you think they would have called in someone who actually has feature directing experience? Especially since it will involve a lot of expensive explosions? As part of the Lonely Island troupe that gave the world Andy Samberg and SNL's best digital shorts, Taccone was a first-hand witness to Hot Rod, the last movie that the Lonely Island guys were given free reign with. We all know how that turned out.
I would love to see Taccone succeed, since he's clearly gifted at making the digital shorts and creating brilliance like "I'm On A Boat." But MacGruber is such an iffy concept for a movie to begin with, I feel like they need to call in all the outside help they can get. Check out a few "MacGruber" segments below and see if you can figure out how on earth that'll make a feature film.
