World Championship Wrestling was a promotion run by Ted Turner. During the late 1990s, WCW was the number one wrestling promotion in America as it had managed to surpass Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation. There were many reasons why WCW was number one. It had the main event talent such as Hulk Hogan, Sting, Ric Flair, and Kevin Nash while younger talent such as Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, and Chris Jericho were used as the mid-carders and they hoped that someday they would be the future of WCW.
However, WCW used storylines such as Hulk Hogan shocking the world by turning heel with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, making the New World Order stable. The group stayed for a long time and eventually WCW was starting to fall to its very own death because of backstage politics used by older talent to make sure that they would always be on the same level. The younger talent realised that they were never going to make a break in WCW so it was no surprise when Benoit, Guerrero, Jericho, and many others such as Dean Malenko and Perry Saturn jumped to the WWF.
Even when WCW brought in WWF Creative Writers, Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara never helped WCW even when they pushed younger talent such as Billy Kidman and Rey Misterio, Jr. because of the backstage politics. More WCW talent were asking for their releases every single day because they wanted to make a break for themselves in the WWF. The man that had carried WCW for years rather than Ted Turner, Eric Bischoff had made several offers but all were rejected and eventually Vince McMahon bought out the company from AOL Time Warner for a lower offer than Bischoff had offered.
WCW was now extinct.
But would the wrestling world be so much different at that time if World Championship Wrestling wasn’t bought out by Vince McMahon and Eric Bischoff had bought out the company instead and changed his ways? We will go back to the date March 18th 2001 where WCW had just finished its WCW Greed Pay-Per-View in Jacksonville, Florida in the Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum and Eric Bischoff had just bought out the company and he is now the new owner where he will try and turn WCW around to what it used to be and hopefully defeat the WWF and Vince McMahon.
Below are the official results from the first ever WCW Greed Pay-Per-View.

Straight after the very unsuccessful Pay-Per-View event, WCW unexpectedly made headlines across the wrestling world when it was announced that Eric Bischoff had bought the company. Many fans logged onto the WCW website on the internet but many were disappointed to see this.
“Eric Bischoff has successfully bought World Championship Wrestling from Ted Turner. WCW will now be taking a week’s hiatus until next Monday night. More updates soon.”
Fans were disappointed about the hiatus because they would have to wait until next week but many understood. The next night, WWF Raw had aired and got a successful rating, still no updates on WCW. On Tuesday night, fans were shocked as an update had been posted again.
“World Championship Wrestling has come to terms of the releases of the following:
Big Vito
Cash
Don Harris
Dustin Rhodes
Ernest Miller
Jason Jett
Kwee Wee
Lash Leroux
Leia Meow
Ms. Jones
Ron Harris
WCW wishes them all the best in all future endeavours.”
Although some were not major big names, people were shocked to see that Dustin Rhodes, Ernest Miller, and The Harris Brothers were released. Fans across the world were all now wondering what would happen to Dustin Rhodes father, Dusty Rhodes. That question was answered a few hours later after the releases of those eleven names.
“World Championship Wrestling has come to the terms of the release of Dusty Rhodes. WCW tried all they could to persuade Dusty Rhodes to renew his contract but we now understand that he wants to concentrate on his new wrestling promotion with his son, Dustin Rhodes. WCW wishes him the best in all future endeavours.”
Now everyone was shocked that WCW had just released Dusty Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes. It was then reported later on several internet sites that it was true that WCW had indeed tried all they could to persuade Dusty to renew his contract but after the release of his son, Dustin Rhodes, he refused and is now concentrating on his new wrestling promotion, Turnbuckle Championship Wrestling, with Dustin.
Over the next few days, there were no more updates. It was Saturday on March 24th, 2001 and WCW Monday Night Nitro was meant to air in two days time. Many were logging onto the WCW website now as Monday approached. On the WWF website, Vince McMahon noticed that WCW was getting a lot of attention but the past week he had put on two kick ass shows, RAW and SmackDown and was putting on a huge main event this Monday which is The Rock teaming up with Steve Austin to take on Undertaker and Kane, to compete with the return of Nitro.
