- Best match(es) of 2007?
From the world of WWE, I'd have to say the first couple of months of 2007 were easily the best they had all year. Pretty much all my favourite wwe matches last year came from the spring PPVs. D-X vs Rated RKO, an extremely over-looked and underated match (in the sense it doesn't get much talking about) was at NYR. Even with the fucked up finish, they still put on a hell of a match before it and coped well (somewhat) with HHH's injury. The next PPV, Royal Rumble, gave us one of the best, if not the best Last Man Standing match ever between John Cena and Umaga. Whilest I didn't really care much for the fued or their first match, this intensity and brutality of this match made it a classic. Speaking of Cena, he also put on TWO great matches with Shawn Michaels. Both matches (Wrestlemania and RAW) were fantastic, though I actually prefer the RAW rematch simply because of how surprising it was. But Wrestlemania gave us not one, but two brilliant matches last year. I may be in the minority, but I actually prefered Batista/Undertaker to HBK/Cena. They made it seem like such a big deal even though it wasn't the main event, the crowd heat for the match was insane and Batista pretty much turned his whole career around in that one match. One of the few WM matches where I thought Taker could have actually lost. As for other companys.... TNA... lol fuck all tbh. ROH gave us the incredibly brutal and emotional Jacobs/Whitmer steel cage match. I'd say it's one of the best steel cage matches ever and one of the best ROH matches in recent memory... easily the best match of both men's careers, just incredible. Then there was the epic Briscoes/Motor City Machine Guns match. Some feel it was just overkill, but I feel it was a classic and one of the best tag matches I've ever seen. They built the match up and escalated it to insane levels. Other matches I loved from last year would be the much-praised KENTA/Ishimori vs Marufuji/Ibushi tag match (so much hate and insane-ness), Nagata/Makabe (one of my favourite bloody brawls ever), Nagata/Tanahashi (just fantastic story-telling) and of course Kobashi's incredible return match.
- Performer(s) of the year?
Looking at the matches I named above, only one man really comes to mind. John Cena, despite being booked like a whore, having one of the lamest championship runs in recent memory and being a hated figure of the e-tards managed to be one of the most consistantly great wrestlers around. If it wasn't giving Umaga the best match of his career, it was wrestling a 50 minute classic with Michaels to an awesome fued with Orton. Other worthy mentions would be Bryan Danielson, even though I think some of his matches from last year are overated, I remember any of his matches I didn't enjoy, and Yuji Nagata for simply putting out great matches and carrying some mediocre wrestlers to great matches.
- Fued of the year?
As weird as it sounds, none of my favourite matches came from good fueds. Umaga/Cena, HBK/Cena, Batista/Taker were all pretty bleh fueds that didn't interest me. I think the best fued from last year was actually Benoit/MVP, it was a great example of the newb over-coming the veteran. The thing I liked the most about it was how the story of the fued was told in the ring. In their first matches, Benoit dominated, but as the fued progressed MVP seemed to take over. Their WM match was alllllllllll about MVP learning Benoit's moves and countering them, then at Backlash MVP was in full control of the match but got beat by a veteran-style roll-up, then MVP finally got the better of Benoit and won the title. Runner-up fued would probably be Danielson/Morishima, for the exact same reasons. They only had like four matches together but each one told a different story. First they have a match for the title, then in their second match Morishima destory's Danielson's injured eye, third match was all about Danielson's revenge... then the fourth about Miroshima's revenge. Good stuff.
I may continue if this actually doesn't die....

*Warning, contains a lot of indy since I don't watch much else*
- Best match(es) of 2007?
I gotta agree with PWI and give to Bryan Danielson/Takeshi Morishima from MMII. It was the first time I got emotional during a match in a long time, because I got scared everytime Mori hit Dragon in the face after he broke his eye socket. Also, the whole deal of Dragon trying to take Mori down with the kicks to the leg all the way through the match was greatness. The climax of that being, one final kick and Mori lets out a horrifying scream and collapses as if Dragon were a lumberjack and Mori a redwood. It's amazing how a botch/injury can make a match better than it probably could've. *waits for Taker/Foley reference* Also gotta give a nod to the KENTA/Ishimori vs Marufuji/Ibushi tag, just all-round greatness.
- Performer(s) of the year?
Dragon, despite being absent for almost half the year, returned with a bang. He had a much-loved match with Nigel McGuinness on PPV, another classic with KENTA, a brutal feud with Morishima, and a series of great matches that helped elevate Austin Aries back to a main eventer. As for the tag team scene, this was the year of The Briscoes. Although their constant no-selling wouldn't get over well come 2008, everybody loved Jay & Mark in 2007. They won the tag titles, had a classic dream match against the Motor City Machine Guns, an epic feud which saw many great matches against Steen & Generico and a great beginning to the rivalry with AOTF.
- Fued of the year?
Gonna give it to The Briscoes vs Steen & Generico. Kevin Steen and El Generico, who supposedly stunk the place out so bad their last time in ROH, their match wasn't shown on DVD, returned in a big way with a surprisingly good match with the tag champs, The Briscoes. Then, Steen got his lust for gold and was determined to get it, using his partner. Coming back from a serious concussion, Mark Briscoe replaced Erick Stevens to team with his brother in another match with Steenerico, in which many people were scared as he took numerous head bumps, including a Brainbuster. They went on to battle in Street Fights, Steel Cages, Best 2/3 Falls and the somewhat controversial Ladder War, with The Briscoes overall retaining their belts. This got The Briscoes hugely popular and made many people big fans of Steenerico, leading to their eventual face turn.

I'm the opposite of Marketh. I hardly watch any indy but saw pretty much everything from WWE last year, and a fair bit of TNA.
- Best match(es) of 2007?
There were a lot of pretty great WWE ones early in the year. The ones that are mentioned a lot. Cena had a lot of very good ones, particularly Cena vs Umaga at Royal Rumble, Cena vs Michaels at Wrestlemania and on Raw, and the 4 way at Backlash. Out of these, I am unsure which one I would pick for Cena's best match of the year, but I might give the nod to the Rumble Last Man Standing match, which basically showed what both men can do and exceeded everyone's expectations. This is how an 'overcoming the odds against a monster' match should be booked. Make it dramatic, make it look like a struggle. Make the monster look monstrous in defeat. The finish was a stroke of genius imo and some of the spots throughout were great. The Michaels match on Raw was close behind, and I honestly don't remember ever seeing a better fatal 4 way than the Backlash one. I found it incredibly entertaining (feel free to disagree with me on this one).
Cena aside, we had a couple of great Batista/Taker matches at Wrestlemania and Backlash. Both of those were among the best matches of the year, and again, happened near the start. The NYR match between DX and Rated RKO was indeed great, and will probably be forgotten. If remembered, it will be mainly for Triple H's injury, which is a shame. Everyone but Orton coped well with the injury. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
As for TNA, the only ones which really spring to mind are the two Cage/Joe matches as Destination X and Bound For Glory, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed, and both of which didn't make it onto the TNA best of 2007 DVD despite the huge lack of great matches. Cage and Joe work extremely well together and, while I didn't like the finish at Destinaton X, both of these matches were easily match of the night and delivered something which TNA matches rarely do.
- Performer(s) of the year?
John Cena. Reminder: Even after this year people still say he is talentless and can't wrestle. I still think the funniest argument anyone can put forward to explain a wrestler they don't like consistently putting on great matches is: 'He was carried'. It just screams of desperation. Cena had an indisputably great year, putting on some great matches and consistently making PPV matches better than they had a right to be.
- Fued of the year?
In mainstream wrestling, 2007 was actually a bad year feud wise. I can't think of too many feuds which were that great, just feuds which contained some great matches. I actually enjoyed Cena/Michaels a lot, and felt it was better than Batista/Taker, so I guess I will go with that, although Jericho/Michaels blows anything from last year in WWE out of the water.
It is easy to forget how horrible the summer-autumn was last year in WWE.
