Monday Night Raw: The New Beginning
Back Story: Vince McMahon was amazed. He had a talent roster unparalleled to any other in professional wrestling today. However, he knew something wasn't right. Only a year prior, WWE, or, more specifically the flagship show Monday Night Raw was averaging ratings in the 4.0's. Now, however, Raw was struggling to reach a 3.5, a loss of over 500,000 viewers in a matter of a year. With wrestling being on the decline since a tragic Double-Murder Suicide, Vince McMahon called for a shakeup.
On June 30th 2008, C.M Punk officially won the World Heavyweight Championship when he cashed in his Money In The Bank contract. This sparked the ratings for a brief period of time, something his $1,000,000 giveaway only weeks prior hadn't. However, something sparked in his head that it's the superstars of today, rather than living on nastalgia, that is going to advance WWE to the future.
Vince McMahon had called C.M Punk in for a meeting regarding WWE, considering he had just become champion. Vince knew about Punk's background on the independent scenes, and was very interested about his stomping grounds, seeing as if Punk could be this successful, there were bound to be more successful stars from where he came from.
C.M Punk mentioned Ring Of Honor, the company that, very much like the original ECW, was a growing company supported only by the fans. However, Punk knew they were struggling financially. Suddenly, Vince knew what he knew he had to do.
Learning from past mistakes by killing ECW, Vince had no intentions to kill ROH. However, he did have a deal for ROH. What Vince wanted was the use of some of their top stars in return for financial backing as an official developmental territory for WWE. Ring Of Honor was honored by this gesture, but knew it would be against the very doings of what the company was based off of. The risk of a talent exchange between the two companies, though, was too much for ROH owner Cary Silkin to turn down, seeing as they wanted to become more of an entertainment based show, regardless. The wrestlers could barely oblige, finally getting a chance on the big stage.
And so the deal was officially set on November 31st. After months of scattering details, allowing WWE superstars on off days to appear for ROH in exchange for the use of all ROH stars on the show as they pleased. WWE wasn't about to call up every single person on the roster, but rather use a few sparingly, and let ROH keep mostly to themselves, while having most in development to grow as better entertainers and wrestlers.
With this done, Monday Night Raw on December 1st would mark a brand new era for the WWE. With C.M Punk still reigning as the World Heavyweight Champion, things were about to be shaken up.
Note: I will only be covering up Monday Night Raw. The PPV's will only be Monday Night Raw, and some roster cuts have been made.
